It Is A Strange Year

Postby cewright » Thu Feb 14, 2008 12:28 pm

Yesterday, I dropped my mare off at Edgewood/Lanning in Pilot Point , TX to foal. Talking with Bill Lanning, the owner, I learned he had foaled 16 mares already this year. He said that none of the 16 had waxed before giving birth and the mares were running longer than normal pregnancies. North TX has had very little rain since the floods ended in June. Most of the pastures are bare because it was too dry for the winter grasses to grow. We speculated the two are related. What is your experience?

We have had several go early this year but most have had typical pre-foaling signs. My friend is going a little bananas right now as she has been doing foal watch for almost an entire week now (gotta love maiden mares  ).

My experience is that every year some will say they are all carrying longer and some will say shorter. Of the 16 mares that didn't wax - at least half did but no one saw it. In the broad scheme of things everything stays pretty much the same - normal.
