Saturday Morning Surprise!

Just wanted to let you all know our big surprise this morning. Last night we had a snowstorm and David was out at 1:15 am checking on the horses. All was well. This morning we went out to feed and surprise...we have a new baby on the ground--a big, strapping, nicely put together bay Thoroughbred filly with a star and three socks. This little girl is by Devon Lane out of Netta Gayle Bell (Slewvescent x SW daughter of Flying Paster).

The mare had her on auto-pilot sometime in the wee hours, without any assistance whatsoever. The foal was dry, standing and nursing by the time we discovered her. Mare and foal are both doing well so far. *knocks on wood*

Keep your fingers crossed for us. We lost her full sibling last year at the breeding farm when he was four days old. Since we're getting out of the business, we decided to foal our mares at home this year and not breed back. (Mare and foal will be for sale. Foal is New Mexico bred eligible.)

What a pleasant surprise!!! And how easy was it for you and David (HA).

Have you thought about breeding them - most mares sell better in-foal. I know it hasn't been easy for you and you know how sorry I am about you and David leaving the business - let's hope you have a great SALE!

I'm sooo sorry Cheryl and Mood Swings. The site didn't notify me there were replies this time.

Well, it's been touch and go, not for the filly, but for the mare. She retained a tag of placenta. We've had the vet out every day since she foaled--shots, pastes, flushes, the works. Laminitus was the big concern and with each day that passed things looked more grim. Today...great news...she passed the placenta and will just need one more flush tomorrow.

I think we're out of the woods, but I'm afraid to uncross these poor, numb fingers. (I can grit my teeth and deal with the $$$ vet bill as long as I have a live mare at the end.)

Filly is doing GREAT! She's beautiful, adventurous, intelligent and soooo curious. So far she's managed to jump into a water tank almost as tall as she is (barn manager found her laying down in the water one morning ) and scoot under the fence to get into a paddock with another horse. Yeah, she's going to keep us on our toes. LOL

Cheryl, no we won't breed back. The mare and filly go up for sale very soon so the new owner can still breed her to the stallion of their choice this year, if they so choose.

It's been so fun having a little one around. Always before they've been born at the breeding farm and we don't see them until they're 2+ months old.

Maybe that little one will convience you just give it one more year with all of us?? I do not know your situation but I know your leaving the business has sadden many.....enjoy the new one and hope that between now and then she can change your mind.
