Feel absolutely sick ...
Man I gotta tell ya - this is the 1st. foal we've ever lost and I feel like somebody ripped my heart out. Our 4 yr. old mare, Bali Hai, lost her Holy Bull baby in the 11th. month. This would have been her 1st. foal. She is fine but sort of has a " what happened " look about her. I could vomit !

I am so sorry for your loss. I know you must feel like you've been kicked in the gut. If it's any consolation the mares we've had that this has happened to seem to bounce back (emotionally) pretty quickly.

Sorry. Speaking from experience it is an awful experience and like LB said, they do bounce back pretty quickly. Was there anything specific that may have caused it? Of course, some maiden mares have trouble with their first pregnancy.

Thanks to all of you guys for the support. clh ; no there really wasn't anything I could put my finger on. Last month I visited the farm to administer her pre foaling dewormer & she was plump and happy. Not even so much as a hiccup along the way but got a phone call late this week from the farm expressing concern 'cause they said she didn't look pregnant anymore - came out of nowhere. Only thing is she never developed any sack at all so maybe this was brewing. But with a maiden mare that's not the sort of thing that would make my hair fall out. Drove out there yesterday to meet the vet and all I had to do was look at her. Looks like she could go to the track ! Did an ultrasound anyway but that just confirmed what I was looking at. We'll send her back to Ky. in about two weeks to breed back to E Dubai but will have some tests run beforehand. We'll take the " kitchen sink " approach going forward ; Regumate, caslicks, etc ... I'm guessing maybe just that maiden mare bugaboo but to go 11 mos ... geez !

Could have been something simple like cord compression. The most helpful thing would have been finding the fetus the day the farm noticed the mare had lost it. It's cheap for a necropsy.
I try not to do Casliks because it causes a helluva mess if they do abort, and you will likely lose that breeding season to vulva repair. Regumate is only used to keep the progesterone level up until past 120 days, and your mare was WELL past that.
While I fully understand, and sympathize with, your sorrow and subsequent "throw out all the stops" thoughts, you might want to discuss the ideas with your vet first.

Yeah ; I agree Madelyn. I went for a walk through the field she was in and didn't find anything but buzzards don't make reservations I guess. To be honest I already spoke with the vet in Pa. about regumate, caslicks etc and she said definitely on both counts but I plan to bounce it all past the vet when she arrives at the farm in Ky.
