"Until our "Canadian friends" make the sale of human consumption horsemeat illegal and the exportation to their "horsemeat consumable" friends the French illegal, I don't like any of them. "
Now, doesn't that sound just a bit racist to you??
And for your information, here are the numbers of horses from US slaughter plants for EXPORT. Read them, then comment (I got the info off of the US government site)
2003 50,062
2004 66,367
On average, over 1000 horses/week were slaughtered in the US in 2004. Remind me again why only Canadians are bad for horse slaughter?
As far as me accusing you of being racist, I will not apologize until you realize we are not all to be painted with the same brush.
Also, for your info, meat prices in Canada right now SUCK!! I just rescued 2 from a local meat buyer for $500 for both of them. Combined weight of them both was around 1600lbs. Do the math...That is less then 0.32 per pound.
No one single person (not commercial meat buyers) would in any way profit from buying American mares, shipping them up here, then selling them for meat. You could buy 2 dozen horses here for the cost of 1 from the US. Don't forget that to cross the border you need a Coggins, and health cert, as well as paying GST at the border. SO.. let's do some figuring.
Say I buy 1 mare from Kentucky. Just to ship her I am looking at $1200 US (about 1800 Can). A coggins and health cert would cost around $100 US(135 Can). Lets say I paid $1000 US for the mare(1250 Can). SO... my total cost to ship the mare here would be at least $2250 Can. Why pay so much to send her for meat when I could buy at LEAST 5 horses at the local auction for that much?
A mare that cost $2250, say an approx 1100lb mare, would net maybe, if your lucky, $385.00 at 0.35/lb. Just doesn't make sense to me!!!
Shannon,
1. You are absolutely right, the numbers of U.S. horses sent to slaughter are disgusting. It is illegal to buy or sell a horse here in California for that purpose. Wish ALL civilized societies would do the same. (Not that California is all that civilized...so if we could do it...how hard could it be?)
2. I think the POINT Joe (and/or I) was trying to make was that there was no price put on what this person (Stealing Kat) was willing to pay for these mares...only that they needed to be "inexpensive". That adjective, in and of itself is so very "subjective" and vague. SO, Joe and I seemed to take the word to mean pretty close to "free" or "way less than fair market value", thus, the not so big jump to "meat price" range perception. Also, SK said "shipping was no problem". She did not elaborate on anything until AFTER Joe made his comments...by that time the fur and name calling was flying everywhere!
3. Since I became involved with people who rescue horses from the kill pens, I've broadened my horizons to find that there are truly wonderful people in this world and there are monsters in this world and sometimes it is hard to tell between the two until you get up close and personal. But most definitely, I have learned to ask questions and see with my own eyes before I believe much of anything truly important anymore. Take that for what it's worth.
