I attended an auction here in Ontario Monday night and was unhappy to see several thoroughbreds that I believe were bought by a meat buyer. Many of them still tucked up with racing plates on. The prices were extremely low, I think the top seller was $1200.00. Some going for as low as $300.00 canadian. There was a really pretty 4yo thoroughbred still in race condition who went through. She is not badly bred, her name is Tip Toe Softly. She brought $675.00, I only wish I had the money to buy her. I didn't notice who bought her, I just hope shes in good hands. I think it would definatly be a good idea to have a web page started for trainers in Canada looking to place retiring thoroughbreds as has been done here ( http://exforg.proboards32.com/ )with tracks in the states. What is invovled to starting one?

To provide assistance to the trainers at the tracks in Canada it's a matter of 'reaching' out to them, let them know it's a free service to place the ads (with included pics). Begin to develop a network of individuals in your immediate area that can volunteer their time to assist and to coordinate meeting w/the trainers, speaking w/them, all the aspects involved.

Example of what you can buy at the "killers"

Decently bred, out of a stakes placed mare (who was 3rd in the Japanese Oaks).

When I said south of the border I did mean Mexico. I have been told that they are buying and hauling down there on a much more active basis. My vet told me that the attitude towards horses down there is more like it is in Japan, they will pay decent money for race horses, match race them and when they are through guess what? Also for some reason he told me that the active killers were being hauled south instead of mare north. I do know of a couple of breeding farms (quarter horse type) that have purchased many PMU mares to use in the embryo transfer programs. I hope that works well to get some of those mares placed in homes. I don't think the amount that they are killing in Illinois is having much impact around here right now. I do know that the local fertilizer plant has been buying at a higher price at the local sale barn, mostly taking ponies and smaller horses, said they don't like the draft types for some reason. They are paying more than they used to but not much still only averaging about 200 or so for a 1,000 lb horse and sometimes 250
I kind of like this thread seems as if we are getting somewhere. Trainers are in the business of training race horses hopefully winners. They dont have time to post horses on sites they dont know about. Im sure they know about the delmar site right!
How about getting the word out about the message board .. the forum for horses for sale to trainers and owners. Maybe some of us in our own little territorys could help this cause by promoting this site for trainers to use for exactly this purpose.
If the trainers dont have time they could allow us to call them up on a set time period and find out if we can help by posting the horses who need homes GOOD HOMES. Trainers could give set time limits as they dont want to hang on to the horses for long and some contact info by telephone to cut down on the window shoppers.Maybe this way we can help them out and the horses......ok more ideas guys come on!!

Tracks and Trainers
What they need in Canada is a CANTER chapter.
Those girls are unbelievable effective in helping move horses, and surfing Canter sites is like a trip to the mall for several BB's (Coth). Several trainers look forward to the Beth and Allie Canter visits on Saturday at Ctown, and there is no telling how many lives they have saved.
The whole key is the stall crunch. The trainers are in NO position to show these horses under saddle, NO "trial periods", and need the horses gone yesterday because they are taking up a pay stall. You would be amazed how fast a $1500 horse becomes an $800 bargain when you have a trailer and cash in hand.
Most all of these trainers would rather see a horse go to a home rather than a sale, but sometimes their backs are against the wall and they have no options. The last filly I bought was from a trainer who was told by the owner to "just can her and take what you get off my tab."

There is a place in Ontario called Longrun that helps place retired thoroughbreds. Their website is http://www.longrunretirement.com They are smaller scale than organizations like CANTER or the Exceller Fund. Longrun ensures good homes but I believe horses are adopted out on contracts. I think something online would help reach out to a lot more trainers and horses..

Supernova,
I used to check their (Longrun) site quite regularly when I was looking for a couple of horses that went missing. Seems like a good organization. BTW, Exceller Fund isn't large...they just have some really dedicated people that voluntarily put in the work of ten people each. They are just this side of "miracle workers"! They are always needing and looking for more good people to join
For those that are interested in creating / developing a means of assistance to Canadian tracks, first and foremost, as BJ stated, it requires dedication to the effort and a constant focus on the horse(s).
I am an active member and on the Advisory board of the Exceller Fund. I am fortunate to have the ability to devote the time that is required to assist the many ottbs in need of transitioning as well as the phone calls & emails, networking with other organizations that makes all the coordination that's involved, successful. You must be aware that it is *very* time consuming, and at times, can be very stressful.
Just this past week the priority was locating rescue facilities with openings as there was a list with 10 horses in need, some coming directly off the track, others being secured from sales, and still another ole' timer (23) that had been dumped by his former owner and was in the possession of a dealer, a consideration we deemed as 'high-risk'. The preparations, coordination and cooperation at times can be like climbing a mountain, but we get the job done. We are accustomed to working in alliance with many other TB organizations, as there is a saying that goes 'working together and in numbers can bring success', and we see that success week after week.
On Monday we were notified of 2 Penn horses. Here's a pic of them after arriving to their rescue on Wednesday (2 days)-

The Exceller Fund, though small in size of members, is large when it comes to the dedication and devotion to the breed. Many work tirelessly to ensure that those ottbs we're alerted to as being in need are secured and on their way to wonderful homes, and often times, in a very short order.
If you are seriously interested in becoming pro-active for the cause feel free to contact the Exceller Fund ( [email protected] ). Anyone of us would be happy to start you in the direction of being able to provide assistance to your local racetracks, and it's the horses that are the direct beneficiaries of our work. For anyone that does not have the ability to become actively involved, monetary donations are always needed as in the majority of
situations, the Exceller Fund bears the burden of costs involved to secure and transport horses off the track and into new careers or retirement. A monthly donation of as little as $15.00 does directly benefit every horse we transition!

With a job, and a farm with 5 horses, 2 kids and a husband who is gone these days roughly 5 days out of every week, my time is very limited. And show season hasn't really started yet!! Plus I really don't know a thing about racing, racetracks, trainers, etc...so if someone gets a thing going in Ontario, I would be more than happy to give what time I can. I can usually make myself available for trailering in a pinch within southwestern Ontario (2 horse ramp- my TB loads right onto it and he is picky). I simply cannot commit X number of hours each week at this point. Am good for emergency needs, paperwork, fundraising, that kind of thing. Anyone who has the hours and/or the contacts to get something good going for horses here in ON, please contact me and I will definitely help where I can...
