PASSE APPROVAL for sale

Postby Keith » Sun Dec 05, 2004 11:40 am

Has anyone seen Passe Approval online for sale on Dreamhorse.com. She is by With Approval and out of Mesabi by Unbridled and her dam is a 3/4 sister to Funistrada and Wakonda. Her 3rd dam is the dam of Cozzene. She is a 16.2 hand gray for sale for $3,000. She says she doesn't have the papers because she was not interested in them but says they can be purchased. The mare is in Oregon.

Owner writes in the ad:
*I do not have her papers, but they can be purchased. I was not interested in having them, as I was planning on keeping her as an all-around horse*

May be true, but sounds fishy to me. Why would anybody not register a horse, in particular a mare, if it is registrable. Of course, at 3, it may cost considerably more. Since she didn't race and thus has no tatoo, her ideantity would have to be established by DNA testing, etc. Would like to see a breeding certificate at the very most. Otherwise, her pretty nice pedigree is of no value.

Be cautious of any "broodmare prospect" that doesn't come with papers. They are costly threw the JC, but they will not replace them just because..

See about getting her past performances, and maybe contacting her last trainer, and see if maybe he has her papers stashed somewhere.

Crystal, the mare didn't race. Either that or she did and the pedigree either got lost or was sent back in to the Jockey Club. Some owners do this as they don't want the horse to race again. Under these circumstances, the mare would only be good for riding or x-breeding and can never produce a registered TB for that matter.
I don't have access to the information, but I can find out if indeed, she ever raced. No doubt, she's a well-bred mare which might justify her asking price, if she is sound.

The papers thing sounds fishy. If she was registered, it would indicate that someone else has the papers and might part with them for a price. If she is unregistered, it is horribly expensive to register a 3yo ($2,000). DNA would identify the horse if the correct parents were provided, but not if she is of other parentage.

If she was registered, you would not need the mare's papers in order to produce a TB that could be registered, unless the papers had been turned into the JC as "sold without Pedigree" and a quick call to the JC would confirm that. You WOULD, however, need her papers to register an Appendix or get her approved for a warmblood cross.

It seems to me that the horse is registered. According to the Breeders' Cup web site, she is Breeders' Cup eligible. How could she be nominated to the Breeders' Cup without being registered????

I just checked my racing database and this horse ran 4 times. So yes, she is registered.

She couldn't run a lick! She earned less than $1,000 lifetime.
Four starts, with the following results.
8th by 68
DNF
6th by 31
10th by 44

The best line in the ad: "I would consider trading for a truck."

You'd do better to breed your truck! Good luck.

my lord.. This is a mare who would do the breed better by not becomming a TBbroodmare. She shows more interest in site seeing, rather then running.

I'm sure everybody has looked Passe Approval's pedigree up by now. You can't deny that she is a pretty well-bred mare, all things considered.

I had the owner send me some pictures of the mare. She warned me that they aren't good pics and that she is much 'prettier' in real life, lol.
Well, the pictures are bad indeed, but I think that if someone would pull that mare's unkempt mane, put just a bit more weight on her [she's not skinny though], and stand her up squarely and in a relaxed manner, she might even look decent. Her legs look o.k. as far as I can tell, but she's standing in grass and so awkward that one can't tell teo much. One picture shows her to have a pretty slanted and deep shoulder, but in another picture it looks just ordinary. She doesn't have a strong top line and the top of her croup to the top of her tail is shorter than what I like to see in a Tb. Also, I would have to see a stick measure to believe that she's 16.2. People are very laxed and often inaccurate about size, and while an inch or so may not make that much of a difference, I'd like accurate information. However, one cannot tell these things from pictures.
Judging from the pictures and considering her dismal racing ability, she's worth about $1K with all the competition right now. Still, her pedigree is tempting. Gosh, With Approval is such a stunning horse, so maybe she really IS better looking in real life or her dam was an ugly duckling, lol.
I'd have to see a video of her before I would seriously consider her, and while prettyness doesn't not a race horse make, there are features about conformation which indicate athleticism or the potential thereof.
