Need Broodmare opinion ASAP!

Postby Camish » Wed Dec 29, 2004 5:48 pm

I recently went and looked at a mare named President Patty (86, by Commemorate-Mare Calda by Gaelic Dancer). What is the general opinion on her? Is she worth my time and money? Thank you! :)

Her record indicates she either hasn't been bred much or she has some physical problems carrying a foal to term. Where did you see her? Is she being used/sold as a broodmare now? What did they tell you? Is she in decent health and condition?

BJ-

I saw her at the farm where she is being boarded. She is currently a broodmare, and the times where she doesn't have foals listed she was bred to non-thoroughbreds. They did say one of her foals died due to an accident as a yearling. She is in good condition for her age, she doesn't look much older than a nine or ten-year-old. She is a little thin, but that is probably due to the fact that she's in a pasture with about thirty other mares and isn't fed hay (that I could see anyway). She's real friendly but her hooves are in need of attention. What would be a reasonable asking price for her? Please let me know what you think. Thank you! :)

Camish...

That would depend on what stallion you might want to breed her to and what you planned to do with the resulting foal. I am certainly no expert, but I would "think" just being pasture fed, might mean she needs some TLC and vetting before adding the additional nutritional drain of pregnancy. Others here are far more knowledgeable than I in that area.

I would also think...just going by the way I do things...that IF you have some stallion in mind that would fit well with her breeding and IMPROVE what has already been done with her, AND you are willing to care for her and the resulting foal, then market value and no more would be what I would pay. Market value could be determined by getting a paper appraisal, which I think you should be willing to pay for ($100 give or take), if you are considering taking on this mare.

She was bred, early on, to Bucksplasher several times, with not so bad results. Depending on where you are and where you intend to race or market her foal(s), these factors would also weigh heavily in your decision to buy her. There are two kinds of value IMO...Market Value and what she is worth to you, based upon what you have in mind. The other positive...IF she is being bred for sporthorse foals, she may have proven diverse value.

You need to share a little more of your plans and hopes before anymore "opinion" can be ventured, I think. When all is said and done...I am really concerned about this mare's future, and hope she ends up in good hands no matter who takes her.

Is there a price being asked at this time? Do you have a stallion in mind?

As a 1986 mare who has not produced anything of note and is currently open, her value is probably something like $500 or $1,000. If you pay any more than that, you're definitely overpaying. After all, she may not even get in foal for you, and then what? Also, frankly, given the costs you'll have to encounter once you buy her, my advice would be to push for the lowest price possible.

That said, she does have some pedigree and if you like what you see and work hard to select a good stallion for her, perhaps your endeavor has a shot.

I'm surprised no details have been given on this mare's tail female line. To start off with, she goes back to La Troienne, and immediate plus, but of course not the most important aspect. 2nd broodmare, INTERVENE, is by Prince John, 3rd, Best Side by Better Self, 4th dam, Belle of Troy by Blue Larkspur, meaning that La Troienne is still 'on the page' which you can only get with now older mares. And while I have VERY limited access to racing and progeny information, the following can be learned from the OPQ:

dam MARE CALDA has 13 foals listed which shows that she definitely didn't have a reproductive problem, lol, so that the mare probably is breeding sound, but checking everything out thoroughly is a wise move before buying an older broodmare [19 now].

other winner. Not bad at all

2nd dam INTERVENE produced a full sister to Mare Calda:ONE CHICKEN INN F 1972 GAELIC DANCER PRINCE JOHN 29-3-0-1 $13,980 which in turn produced:
SUPER DIAMOND (USA) b G 1980 PASS THE GLASS GAELIC DANCER 37-16-5-5 $1,469,233

also from this mare's offspring:

VITO CORLEONE ch H 1999 MEMO FORT CALGARY 23-5-0-3 $192,911 as of 4/4/04
ENZO THE BAKER G 1996 MEMO FORT CALGARY 17-5-?-? $124,988 1

Many of the youngish mares in this branch are bred to inferior stallions though, but there is a good bit of breeding going on still.

Bottom line remains the same: much will depend on your goals and the stallion you will breed [be able to afford]for a breeding.

Best wishes
Sabine

If you buy her I would consider Sabona.

Hi!

Sabona crossed with your mare would be 2x3 Exclusive Native 3x5 Hail to Reason 5x5 Nasrullah 6x6x6x6 Nearco and Sabona traces back to the famous mare Marguerite the dam of Fighting Fox and Gallant Fox. Sabona is in Illinois and I think he would be a good cross if you get President Patty.

I love Gaelic's Dancer. I had a daughter of Gaelic's Dancer that produced two nice NW stakes horses notably Theycallmecolonel who has also proven to be quite durable. I'd probably chance her.
