OBS Mixed Sale - go get a mare!
I know of a lot of consignors of mares at this sale that have stated they will NOT be bringing mares home. So if anyone ever thought about getting a mare, or want to add a riding horse or sporthorse mare to your herd, this year is the time to do it. They will be CHEAP. I expect there will be a lot of no bids that will sell in the back for several hundred dollars.

Eugene Melnyk has a few geldings of racing age in the sale, who've proved worthless on the racetrack, that I think could be great sport horse projects for someone. They actually have some recent works at Melnyk's farm so they're still somewhat race fit and ought to be sound, but I'd hate to see someone waste their time and money trying to race them. I also don't think a person would have to even bid (minimum bid of $1,000) for them - let them rna/no bid at $1,000 and then go back to the barn and offer them $500.
One of these prospects as an example is Hip 602 - Coles Cove.
4yo dark bay gelding by Grand Slam out of a Theatrical mare.
He's from the family of Rags To Riches (his second dam and Rag's second dam are half-sisters) and he is inbred 5x3 to Broodmare Of The Year Best In Show.
Now all of the pedigree stuff is really just a conversation piece thing for this gelding, but sport horse folks love when their horse is a conversation piece.
He's selling late in the open session, and I've got to believe the only interest in this gelding would be from people looking to transition him to a new career, so I think there's an excellent chance you could get him back at the barn for $500.
Don't see any point in racing him as in his only start (last year) he was 8th of 12 (beaten a dozen lengths) in a $7,500 Maiden Claimer at Penn National. And the fact that he debuted for $7,500 at Penn tells you that Melnyk knew before he even ran a race that he wasn't worth a darn as a racehorse.
Kudus to Melnyk though for taking good care of him for the past year and giving him a chance to be bought by someone who may do something great with him in another career.
Yeah, conversation peice is nice, but a lot of sport horse people are just as interested in pedigree=performance, as race horse people
. i.e. this gelding has, along with the usual suspects, some of my favorites. Gone West usually throws good conformation, and a couple of the ones not often seen, but desirable to me, are Alydar (good temperament) and Graustark.
