Secretariat Mare

Postby Barelystable » Sat Oct 23, 2004 11:38 am

Hi all~

I was referred to this forum by a friend who thought you all might be able to help. I am looking to find a mare by Secretariat. Doesn't have to be sound for riding or breeding. It would be a sentimental purchase for my mother who is a HUGE Secretariat lover. She is looking for a horse she can just "love-on" and would be thrilled to own a daughter of Secretariat. Don't know if I can find one...(I found 2 greys that were old ads, and they were already sold..) Just thought I'd give it a try. The mare would have a fabulous home to retire to. (Heated barn, grass paddocks, lots of love, etc.) Hope you all can help!

Thanks!

Lynne

I would suggest to be vigilant in searching for this 'special' mare. I know there out there. If I come across one, I'll let you know. Happy searching

Thunder~

Thank you for your encouragement! I know that there are some out there, it's just taking a while to find one! :-) I've had some luck finding sons of Secretariat, (most have been studs) but my mother loves the girls! :-) I will keep up the search, I just can't wait to find one, my mother will be thrilled! And the horse couldn't look for a better "forever" home! Thanks again!

I just happened to come across her the other day, not a daughter but related. The price is right.

Secretariat mare for sale.

Postby Keith » Sun Oct 24, 2004 10:58 am

Hi!,

There is an 18 year old Secretariat mare for sale and the email address to contact that person is [email protected] and the seller is Mike Brookes and the phone number is 352-369-8612 and she is in foal to Wild Escapade. She has been posted online for a while. Her name is Sacred Dance. They have her priced at $3500 but she has been for sale for a while so they may consider offers. the horse is in Florida.

Hi again, all!

Thanks so much for all of the replies!
Keith- I actually inquired about the mare "Sacred Dance" about 3 months ago. The response I got (by e-mail) was that she had been sold. I will try and inquire again, I'll give the owner a call first thing in the morning. Does anyone know of any other good Thoroughbred sales websites for me to searck. (I am a devotee of Starquine and Sales Ring...any others?)
Thanks again!

Lynne,
Hip #3186 in the Keeneland November sale may be one to watch. She is from an incredible family, (dam is a full to El Gran Senor), so one would expect her to be expensive. However, at age 17, not currently in foal, and not having a foal in 2004, her price will drop considerably. Not many people want to spend much on a mare who will have her next foal at age 19, if she can even conceive. She may be worth a try.

The others in the sale will be priced much higher. They are slightly younger and in-foal... and have quality production records.

There is not a Secretariat mare in the F-T November sale... however, I would keep my eyes open for one in the Fasig Tipton December, Keeneland January, and Fasig Tipton February. There often are some older mares slipped into these sales with the sole intent to move them along. Such mares rarely bring much.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, everyone! I actually just received my "library" of sales catalogs for the Keenland Nov Breeding Stock Sale. (This is gonna take me about a year to get through, it always does...haha)
KAL- I did look up Hip 3186, and she is from a very nice family. Just out of curiosity, how much would you expect her to go for? Also, if I am not able to make it out to the sale, can I hire a sales agent to bid on the horse for me? Just a ton of questions! haha Thanks again everyone!

Also, the Sales Ring website is: www.salesring.com

Thanks,
Lynne

Barleystable, so much of 3186's value will depend upon how she looks and even more importantly how she may vet. It is also nearly impossible to predict who may decide to "take a chance" on her.

I have seen similar mares bring less than $5000, (if I remember correctly there was a Secretariat mare who had produced a graded stakes winner who went through for around $5500 or so), and, of course, a few will go for a few times that. Taking a quick look at my Nov. catalog from last year... interestingly hip #3186, the dam of Shoal Creek, sold in foal to Crown Ambassador, for $6,000... she was 18.

Mares like this are the hardest to predict when discussing "how much", because it all depends upon who is there and is willing to gamble, and even more importantly, how they vet and look. In this particular case, it may be the reserve which proves to be the limiting factor. Another problem with this mare is that she is perfect for a breeder / vet, especially such from a small market. If you can get just one foal from this mare, it could be a stallion prospect or a decent broodmare prospect.

This may not be the "one", but if you look for similar in F-T and Kee Jan, you probably will soon find one.

You can hire any number of people to perform the purchase for you. You can even do the bidding by phone. I believe you can also contact Keeneland concerning a particular hip # and provide an amount you are willing to go to... they will assign someone to bid for you (not certain about this... had a friend do it, however he may have been calling on a "connection" at Keeneland to do him a favor). I, personally, am not certain I would do the latter, however I have bid by phone and found it a good experience... although I ended up the underbidder. Important things to do... fill out the paperwork to bid and send in. Also, if you wish to hire an agent, you will have to fill out that paperwork as well (and I believe it has to be notarized).

I'd be willing to bid for you, (I am not an agent... so my charges amount to just enough to buy myself a coke and candy bar...), but I am planning on leaving Sunday evening or Monday morning. If you are interested, let me know and I will happily provide the name of a young man who could take care of everything, inclusive of the purchase, shipping, and boarding until you can make arrangements to get her. Great, great guy with a fantastic reputation!

Hey again, everyone!

Thanks so much for all of the help an information!

KAL~ thank you so much for all of your advice and help. I would hope to be able to make it out for at least the tail end of the Nov sale. I will also call Keenland about the option to bid on the phone. (I know that you are able to watch and listen to the auction on the internet...although with my internet connection it would be a long haul..:-) If I run into a bit of a snag, I would love to know the information on your connection at Keenland. Also, out of curiousity...what do you think of HIP 1000 and HIP 2447? The probably will bring a considerable amount more than the other Secretariat daughter...who knows..:-) Thanks again!

Hip 1000 will probably bring some decent money, can see her reaching 6 figures easily... as she is only limited by her age, and she is currently infoal and hasn't much negative recent history. She should do quite well...provided she is still in foal to Carson City. She obviously is from a tremendous family, and is herself a full to Terlingua, Storm Cats dam.

Hip 2447 looks to be an Overbrook mare, or one with ties to Overbrook. She has the least pedigree of the 3, however she is in foal. On the other hand, with her pedigree which pales in comparison to the other two and with her age... she could slip through and fall for a surprising price. However, I doubt it. Reiley and Tom do a pretty good job of seeing a mare like this gets sold. Tom also may have an interest in her as she might make for a good mate for one of his stallion interests. You might try calling Eaton and asking about her... including what it might take to buy her privately. While you are at it, tell them what you are looking for... they might know of one.

Good luck!
