GR II Swale Stakes

Postby TJ » Wed Feb 26, 2014 4:22 pm

There are no Derby points for this race...which was one time a Derby stepping stone. They quickly eliminated this race from consideration under the new system after Trinniberg used it's graded stakes earnings to propel him into the Derby. Yet the race is being used to bring Havana back to the races, so it has a bit of meaning this season. It also features undefeated No Nay Never who broke his maiden at Keeneland, then shipped to win at Ascot and followed it up with a GR I win in Deauville, France. It's his first start as a 3YO and he's working very well. Past Performances are below the entries. TJ

Havana looks to be the one to beat on paper. But No Nay Never's 2-year-old form is very impressive. I like him over Havana.

If No Nay Never runs anything near his works over the track he looks real hard to go past in this 7 furlong test, might get a nice price on him because his wins were accomplished on synthetic and turf races. Ward does know how to train horses, and this one looks very playable to me.

With the withdrawal of Havana (due to a quarter crack), it took the luster away from the Swale. As it turns out, No Nay Never needs turf sprints and will be heading back across the pond. If anything, the race might leave only one possible Derby Candidate....Spot. Nothing really impressive other then the large payoff in a short field with the odds on favorite in the middle. The race is below. TJ
