Here's The Current Derby Point Standings (PLUS PP'S)

Postby TJ » Sun Apr 10, 2016 12:25 pm

Here's the way it looks so far. The cutoff point is way up there this year, currently 32 points. From the looks of it, a couple bad starts didn't turn off Mohaymen or Shagaf who are definite starters. Maiden, Trojan Nation, is seriously considering a run in the Derby. No official word yet on Danzig Candy...but that was a bad track at SA so I hope he runs. If either Trojan Nation or Danzig Candy do exit, "bubbleboy" Laoban, another maiden will be happy to take the spot. The toughest beat in the points I see is Cherry Wine, who deserves a shot in the Derby. I wonder if Cherry Wine could spice up the wildcard race and run back in a weeks time in The Lexington...if he wins it, he will jump the 32 point group. Looking further forward, the Arkansas Derby could knock out a bunch of the 32 pointers all together with the likes of Creator, Whitmore, Suddenbreakingnews, Discreetness, Dazzling Gem and Unbridled Outlaw looking to knock out the end of the list. Okay, here is the final Derby point standings. The top 20 will be in the Derby unless they are withdrawn by their connections for one reason or another. This is the highest Derby points accumulated by the number 20 Derby entrant...40 points, that's a lot considering they've gotten in with 20 in past years....if you remember, the past two years Dallas Stewart drew in off the bubble and finished 2nd both times at big prices:>) Dallas isn't worrying about that this year, he's in the Derby at number 17. Six others that have accumulated more then 20 points are all waiting to see what happens. Unfortunately hard luck Mo Tom, is on the Bubble, number 21 hoping to get in, he surely deserves a shot. TJ

Cupid is out - goes in for surgery for an entrapped epiglotis.
Mo Tom in!

Also, Fellowship is now trained by Mark Casse.

Hi Cree,
It's nice to see hard luck Mo Tom get in the Derby...probably the first lucky break he's had since his last two races:>) Glad it isn't something serious that stopped Cupid...if all goes well, he might still make the Preakness.
I was surprised to see Jack Brei (Jacks or Better Farm) take his horses away from Stanley Gold, together they won almost 60 stakes races during the 10 years they've been together. TJ

The good news is the past performances for the Derby are out!! The bad news is it doesn't make picking the winner any easier:>) This version of the PP's is currently up to date with Mo Tom listed as number 20. Be aware the horses are listed by derby points and earnings and actual post positions won't be drawn till Derby week. TJ

A tough race.
I think Nyquist will run his usual big race, but I see a closer (which one... that is the question!??!) nipping him at the finish. What a tough year!

Hi Cree,
Fellowship had his first breeze for the Casse barn yesterday. He worked a strong 5/8ths (1:00.40)and Casse's son was very impressed with him. It's a positive sign that he worked so well at CD, as some horses don't like the surface. On the negative side, he always was a very good workhorse...but maybe in Casse's hands, he will show more then he did for Stanley Gold off a good work? TJ

I'm reserving judgement until after the Derby, but I'm secretly hoping he outruns his pedigree.
I'd love for him to be the real deal, and not just a great horse at certain distances.
