After the BC, So Many Swan Songs

I was so caught up with all the horses retiring after this seasons BC Event like Beholder, Frosted, Curalina and Tamarkuz to name some. I mistakenly thought California Chrome was retiring to stud at Taylor Made at the end of the year. Nope, that's not gonna happen. He will stay at the track and train up to the 12 Million Dollar Pegasus down here at Gulfstream Park on January 28th at a distance of 1 1/8th miles. That being said...this may not guarantee a rematch between California Chrome and Arrogate. There is no doubt California Chrome will point for the Pegasus since his connections are one of 12 who purchased starting spots for the race. Juddmonte Farm who owns Arrogate did not purchase a spot. Under the unique conditions of this race, twelve owners who purchased these starting spots at the cost of one million dollars each, can sell their spot or work out a percentage arrangement to allow another horse to enter the field in their stead. So Baffert, who currently has not made a commitment to run Arrogate, did say he would like to race Hoppertunity in the Pegasus since he doesn't particularly like the California tracks? Here's a couple articles updating California Chrome and Arrogate written Sunday after the race. TJ

I am of the opinion that Hoppertunity does seem to run better on tracks outside of his home state ...
Be curious to see if he somehow gets to participate in the new big race!

Hi Aug,
If Baffert decides to run Hoppertunity he won't have a problem purchasing a spot. James McIngvale of Runhappy "former" fame, all ready said he's willing to sell his spot for $2 million. That being said...it would hardly be worth it to buy the spot for $2 million unless you think you can beat California Chrome. Others who own spots, might not currently own a horse that belongs in the race...so they all may be looking to play "lets make a deal":>)
Another interesting aspect of the unique conditions of the Pegasus is a 5 pound weight allowance for entries running without Lasix. Below is the list of those who own the starting spots in the race. TJ

Frank Stronach
James McIngvale
Sol Kumin and James Covello
Coolmore
Reddam Racing
California Chrome LLC
Daniel Schafer
Jerry & Ronald Frankel
Starlight Pegasus Partners
Reeves Thoroughbreds
Jeff Weiss and Rosedown Racing
Ruis Racing

Looks like CC might prep for the Pegasus at his home-track of Los Alamitos December 17th.... IF, track management can work out the details with TOC. Here's the story. TJ
