It's Derby Time

Postby TJ » Thu Feb 02, 2017 5:35 pm

Here we go again:>) This weekend there are three 17 Point Derby Races....not big points yet, but one did draw the 2YO Champion Classic Empire who will be making his 3YO debut in the GR II Holy Bull at GP. Below are the entries for the 3 Derby point races along with past performances. Also added an additional race (no points) which could produce a future Derby contender from the GR II Swale, a 7/8ths sprint. The two possibilities are making their 3YO debuts after disappointing races in the BC Juvenile (Three Rules) and BC Juvenile Turf (Favorable Outcome). The Withers drew a decent field and a good betting race...only disappointing race is at SA, small field of 5 with 3 of those trained by O'Neill. TJ

Here's the results for the Swale Stakes....doesn't look like Derby for either of the top two. Three Rules might need a van to go a mile and a quarter....though Favorable Outcome rated patiently and did get to Three Rules by a 1/2 in deep stretch, Chad Brown will keep him sprinting. TJ

El Areeb looked really good out there, but I have a hard time gauging the 3-year-olds racing at Aqueduct every year. Exchange Rate on the top side makes me reluctant to think he can go 10 furlongs, but his female family has a tonne of stamina - that is a Sam-Son Farm female family :-) :-)

Here's the results of the Holy Bull Stakes:
Irish War Cry...very professional win for Graham Motion's son of Curlin.
Gunnevera...clear 2nd
Classic Empire...was in a lather behind the gate and was reluctant to enter, ran a poor 3rd.
Talk Logistics...finished 4th

Irish War Cry - I didn't even pay attention to him. Whoops. Nice colt!
And, looking at his pedigree I get pretty excited. He's got Bold Ruckus back there in his dam's side - whom I love to see in any pedigree.

I don't think Classic Empire has his mental issues sorted out - that seems to be his weakness. Also, I am not totally convinced that Casse can bring them successfully from 2 to 3 very often. He's a good 2-year-old trainer.

Last month Sid Fernandez posted this good piece on Irish War Cry's pedigree. (Bottom line all the way back to a Tesio mare and includes an old favorite of mine, Irish Derby winner Tambourine.) The pedigree of his owner is just as fascinating. Her father was general manager of Monmouth where the Haskell Invitation is named in honor of him. She herself raced sports cars in Europe and later manufactured them there. Great backstory for a Derby horse.

Hi Patuxet,
Nice to hear from you, hope all is well and thanks for that great article. It was nice to see Motion have another contender and I do hope Motion returns this horse to rider Feargal Lynch (who was unable to ride him in the Holy Bull). How about a New Jersey bred popping up as a Derby contender considering breeding in Jersey has been on the decline. Irish War Cry being 1 of only 117 registered NJ bred foals in 2014. Now the next step is trying to become the 3rd NJ bred to win the Kentucky Derby in a very long time....the other two were Regret (1915) and Cavalcade (1934). Irish War Cry should get his chance to try considering his breeding and Graham Motion at the helm:>) TJ

Casse is reporting that Classic Empire has a foot abscess. Although I don't doubt this is true, I did notice this horse did not grow much, and reminds me a little of Brody's Cause - he's just small and fine-boned. And, his mind works in mysterious ways, I don't trust that for a big day like Derby Day.
Then compare him to a horse like Irish War Cry who looks like a big, strong boy who is just coming into his own... sometimes the good 2-year-olds just don't develop at 3. I guess the next race for Classic Empire will help us clarify this.

Ghostzapper has two talented Derby colts this year in McCraken and Iliad. Both have female families that suggest they will go long.

Hi Cree,
Yes, Iliad is the colt Kaleem Shah took away from Baffert and gave to O'Neill. Looks like a nice horse and there's more on the way this year:>) Iliad had a 96 beyer, McKracken got a 95, Irish War Cry a 97 and El Areeb a 92. The filly Unique Bella had a 98 in her last win....she's just like Songbird last season, she always had higher numbers than the 3YO colts when she won. TJ
