He's one of "mine", and I've been so out of it I didn't realize he was a TC contender . . .

Asmussen keeps a nice sized string at the Fair Grounds and used the Risen Star-LA Derby before to get his Derby contenders to that race. Local Hero seems to be getting his act together and ran a decent race in his first attempt against graded stakes company. He was a bit on the muscle and will need to temper his speed if he expects to go a mile and a quarter. I think Asmussen will use the same route to the Derby as he did with Gun Runner last season and come back in the Louisiana Derby at a mile and an eighth. If he shows a strong race in there, he could earn his ticket to Kentucky.... I was pretty impressed with Girven's powerful win (as well as Asmussen's other horse Untrapped) and if Local Contender can handle either in the LA Derby, he could be a legitimate threat in the Derby.
