The GR II Tampa Bay Derby

Postby TJ » Thu Mar 09, 2017 7:52 am

This renewal of the TBD turned into an interesting race with the withdrawal of McCraken. Opening the door for a few that would not have had a chance to pick up a major 50 point payday for a Derby slot. None of these contenders currently are in the top 20 derby points leaders, but the top two finishers here will jump into the top 20. PP's below. TJ

The track is quick at Tampa...Stanford and Johnny V set a new track record for the mile and a sixteenth (141.75) eclipsing McCraken's recent record. TJ

Hi Cree,
Much of these track record breaking performances go hand in hand with the quality of horses turning out for their winter meet. Their Stakes program continues to improve and the Tampa Bay Derby has continued to be a top 3YO draw for serious Derby contenders. In addition, the 1 1/16th mile distance is their most used Graded Stakes and Stakes distance. They don't run a 1 1/8th mile distance there so the 1 1/16th distance record continues to be broken...Street Sense (1:43.11), Destin (1:42.82), McCraken in winning the Sam F. Davis S. (1:42.45) all broke the record, but Tapwrit (1:42.36) had to settle for setting the Tampa Bay Derby record since Stanford (1:41.75) shattered the old 1 1/16th mile record earlier on the card. TJ

Here's the replay of the Tampa Bay Derby...after Mastery's unfortunate injury, Tapwrit settles into a strong contending position. Though his beyer was only a 96...not quite making sense of this. McCraken also broke the record at that distance and received a 95. By comparison Mastery's 105, J Boys Echo 102, One Liner (another Pletcher) 102, Irish War Cry 101 (since falling by the wayside) the filly Unique Bella 99 and Gunnevera's most impressive win was only 97. Looking forward to who shows up for the Florida Derby and the Wood Memorial. Pletcher has another hot 3YO in Always Dreaming and Battalion Runner who both will be eyeing those races. TJ
