The GR III Sunland Derby

Postby TJ » Thu Mar 23, 2017 8:37 am

This Sunday 3/26, will be the final 50-20-10-5 Derby points prep race of the program, the 1 1/8th mile Sunlad Derby. All remaining preps will be worth 100-40-20-10 across the board. Though there is a wild card race at Keeneland worth only 10-4-2-1 on the final day of the preps 4/15...now run the same day as the Arkansas Derby. That race was originally used to bump up those who needed a little extra to get off the bubble and into the race. Yet since the time now coincides with the Arkansas Derby...it seems to have lost it's influence. Check out the entries and PP's below. TJ

Hi Cree,
Baffert's having a tough go with his 3YO's this season. Of course the biggest loss was Mastery, but Bronze Age who stumbled badly was eased and walked off was the 2nd of his favored 3YO's to do so yesterday. His good 3YO filly, Noted and Quoted, was also eased and walked off in the Sunland Park Oaks. TJ

On a positive note, it was nice to see the local jocks run 1-2 in this high-dollar event: too often we see the big-name riders come in and take the lion's share of these big purses at smaller tracks, IMO.

Hence has an interesting pedigree - by Street Boss out of an AP Indy mare. Although he's by a stallion that was a sprinter, who often produces sprinter types, Street Boss is also siring horses like Cathryn Sophia and Danza who stretched out to 8.5-9 furlongs, and Metaboss who was a distance turf horse. Street Boss is showing he can sire all kinds of horses.
The rest of Hence's pedigree indicates he could stretch out. That field wasn't exactly a tough one, but this year is looking like a bit of an odd one anyway. Thoughts on Hence?
