Super Saturday for 3YO Derby Contenders

Postby TJ » Thu Mar 08, 2018 9:35 am

This Saturday there are 3 important Derby Points Prep Races on tap. All are worth 50-20-10-5 across the board and being run at Aqueduct, Tampa Bay Downs and Santa Anita. Some excellent Derby prospects are entered including Bolt d'Oro (who will be ridden by Javier Castellano for the first time) and Bob Baffert's Mckinzie with Mike Smith in the irons. Dale Romans, who won last Saturday's Fountain Of Youth with Promises Fulfilled, opted to scratch Free Drop Billy from that race and run instead in NY's Gotham Stakes. Free Drop Billy (as well as Enticed) are also cross entered in the Tampa Bay Derby, but both are expected to run in the Gotham. The cross entering of both, is in case the flight to NY is cancelled due to weather? These three races present an interesting handicapping challenge and those who can figure it out could be well rewarded....good luck! TJ

Hi Cree,
Free Drop Billy and Enticed will both run in the Gotham. There's a strong possibility Bolt d'Oro will scratch from the San Felipe due to expected heavy rains, Calexman is out. TJ

Quip...a gritty win at 19-1.
Flameaway...tried but could not get by winner.
World Of Trouble...was 3rd
Vino Rosso...a disappointing 4th.

Here's the results of the San Felipe:
Bolt d'Oro...very game race just missed, despite the rains which came late. Knocked sideways at head of stretch and was awarded the win.
McKinzie...won by a nose but was dq'd.
Kanthaka...distant 3rd
Peace...4th

Good call by the stewards...McKinzie was disqualified and placed 2nd.

Hi Cree,
Thanks, I got lucky:>) It looked like Smith forgot what it's like when a rider rides you close to the wood and couldn't wait to get out of there:>) I like the way both of them ran, but if Bolt d'Oro comes out of this race OK, he should move forward off that layoff? Showed a lot of grit hanging in there between the bumping and the layoff. TJ

I really like that colt (Bolt). He’s shown that he has no quit a couple of times, and he’s just so athletic to recover and keep going. I like him stretching out more than I do Mckinzie.
Interesting to see where Baffert goes next time with this horse, he was peeved that he got DQ’d.

Hi Cree,
Yes, I like Bolt too. I was very impressed with his workouts going into this. He reminds me of horses from earlier times no nonsense, all business, hard trying, ordinary looking bay. He did have issues off the layoff, so I hope he stays healthy. It was very telling when Castellano went to California for his workout two back. He worked 3/4's and must have galloped out a mile and an eighth before he pulled up. Before leaving this thread, I have to say I was also impressed with Quip making his 3YO debut in the TBD, breaking from the outside and showing a pretty fair bit of grit himself. Again the telltale sign was the rider...Florent Geroux coming in to ride for the WinStar Farm and China Horse International runner.
It isn't often Baffert and Smith do not get the benefit of the doubt on the west coast, hence the crying (and a bit of bending the truth) by both of them. I did mention Smith being uncomfortable with being ridden close to the rail and he mentions that himself in the below article...guess he forgot race riding can be that way:>)
Next week we get to see two more Baffert contenders in Justify (Sunland Derby) and Solomini (Rebel Stakes). The Jeff Ruby 'Steaks' is also on tap....but that is a synthetic surface. Besides, who runs in a race that calls it STEAKS and not Stakes:>) TJ
