McKinzie Out of SA Derby

Postby TJ » Sun Apr 01, 2018 3:17 pm

Below read the McKinzie article. I wonder if Baffert will enter Justify in there and avoid shipping him to Arkansas...he is nominated to both races? TJ

Hmm... does this mean he is out of the Kentucky Derby? Have they said more about his soreness?

Catholic Boy bled pretty badly in the Florida Derby. Will he be out of the Derby, too?

Hi Cree,
At this point nothing has changed concerning the injury. He did work 5/8ths last Monday in 59.40 and came out OK. The injury appeared later in the week and x-ray/scans showed nothing conclusive. Since none of the tests/vets could pinpoint why the sudden short term lameness appeared, Baffert will not risk running/training him till they can come up with what exactly happened. Baffert mentioned McKinzie could have injured himself in the stall...if that is the final determination and no other injury is uncovered by additional x-rays/scans, he could make the Derby IF Baffert and his vets feel certain there is no significant injury which could cause a breakdown.
Baffert's really in a bad position...because whenever there is doubt as to the 'why' a certain lameness appeared, it's a constant worry each time you send the horse out to train. If he does go on with McKinzie and something happens, it's all on him. I'm sure we will hear more about their decision to go forward or not...now that Baffert's returned from Dubai and will have a chance to look him over himself. TJ

Hi George,
Well, that answers the question why Catholic Boy didn't fire. If he bled significantly through lasix, he needs time off and will definitely miss the Derby. TJ

Santa Anita Update: Justify will work this morning (Monday) at Santa Anita! If he works to Baffert's approval, he will likely take McKinzie's place in the Santa Anita Derby this coming Saturday. TJ

Sounds like a Kentucky Derby start is not looking good for McKinzie, according to Baffert.

Hi Cree,
Thanks for that info. When you don't know what you're dealing with, they just have to take the hit and protect the horse. TJ

Looks like all systems are go for Justify to run in the SA Derby, provided he comes out of this morning's 3/4 breeze (1:13.20) in good order. Solomini will now be sent to the Arkansas Derby...it's good to be the King:>) TJ
