Here is my mare Isarwolke:

She had an accident as a two year old on the track and is now with me as a broodmare. She is very tall. Will have her first baby this coming season.
These photos were taken when she came from the track as a two year old, except the first which I took two days ago

According to my copy of Equine Color Genetics by Phillip Sponenberg, the 1996 edition, flaxen mane is probably controled by a number of genes acting together. There are some reports that the flaxen gene is a simple recessive--two copies needed for the light color expression.
Has anyone had the experience of breeding two flaxen chestnuts together and getting either flaxen chestnuts, or chestnuts with dark manes?

Be My Guest and Nijinsky (both by Northern Dancer) are familiar names within the sabino realm. The extreme sabino white horse, Directs Unique One is a good example coming from this lineage (Nijinsky). I have observed in photos that some sabino white lineages are very friendly to flaxen manes and tails in their siblings, but this is not a micro-biological or scientifically proven point.

The filly foal in these photos shed out to be a wildly roaned and speckled-spotted girl - and her mane has shed out to creamy silver, her tail is just flaxen. Quite the fancy baby girl. the mare's pedigree is here

As per TAMAJET, take a look at the photo of the ancestor, VAIN, who is providing two doses to this pedigree. See Vain's photo at

Any other photo of him and/or a comment?

With conformation photo, the db pedigree's photo link is broken.
Looks dark chestnut not flaxen in this photo.

I trained a chestnut filly with a flaxen mane and tail - her name was JPs Chessie. Very pretty to look at, not much talent at all on the track.
