The crop of K. Derby-caliber gray sophomores is short this year (2008).
The most reknown hopefuls are:

01. KING'S SILVER SON -- Impressive late rushing style. Made me
remember Giacomo.

02. Z FORTUNE -- He was impressively improving until his last race.
Another late rusher, so it seemed. Will see.

03. LIBERTY BULL -- Improving too.

Any other missing case?

Hmmm, Macho Again looks quite sabino on some of his legs. Looks like a late bloomer with a one kick running style. Made me remember High Echelon.

Interesting that a Thoroughbred would be sorrel in color...in the ped database on this site he is listed as chestnut. When I think of sorrel, I think of Quarter Horses.

I don't think Jet Run is nominated to the TC, but he is grey/roan sin of Waquoit and is a full brother to Water Cannon who ran in the 2004 Preakness.

Seems like this year there will be no gray in the Kentucky Derby.

Eight Belles (by Unbridled's Song) has talent but she seems more probable within the sophomore fillies.

Two Blue Grass hopefuls to be added to the list:

Now there is a legitimate K.Derby hopeful: Monba

Curiously, during the 1970s, there was a gray horse who raced in the old El Comandante racetrack named Mon-Va. But this one was named in honor of a jockey: Ramon "Mon" Vazquez. I suspect that Mon-Va was by Gray Phantom but his name does not appear here in the database. Perhaps it can be included.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now there is a legitimate K. Derby hopeful: Z Fortune

With his latest performance he should be re-inserted among the horses
to watch. Both hopefuls are late rushers, a good trait for the Derby.

Mon Va was indeed by Gray Phantom and has been added to the database.

Nessa,

Thank you so much for the addition of namesake MON VA.

Hmmm, good company for him ---El Pitirre and El Españoleto!

http://www.pedigreequery.com/progeny/broadway+traffic

As far I remember his name was written in the program with a dash (MON-VA) but who knows if this was an error in the program. :?: But I know he was named for that jockey.

The more talented MONBA (2005) derives his name from his parents.

03. KANDAHAR RUN (GB)(2005)
04. YAHRAB (IRE)(2005)

The last gray to win the Epsom Derby was Airborne in 1946 ---62 years ago!
