Just curious if my new filly is just a unique shade of chestnut or something else. She is out of a bay mare and was sired by a Belgian draft who is what I would consider a darker shade of palomino. He is at the bottom of the page.
Now,granted, she's not a Thoroughbred but she is just as cute!

The coat color calculator I use gives the following percentages on possibilities for a palomino sire and a bay dam:
Offspring Color Probability
25.00% - Buckskin
25.00% - Bay
16.67% - Palomino
16.67% - Chestnut
8.33% - Smoky Black
8.33% - Black
She looks chestnut to me right now, but she will change when she sheds out.

Come to think of it, I don't think so. Here is what I found on the breed standards for Belgians:
Distinguishing features: small head, thick and muscular neck, powerful shoulders and quarters, short legs with small amount of feathering. Chestnut or red roan in colour, they can stand up to 17 hh (1.7 m).
Alternative names: Brabant
Belgium Heavy Draft
Country of origin: Belgium
Other sites describe their color as sorrel with flaxen mane and tail. You are spot on Springboro!

I agree,I don't think genetically he is a Palomino but he does look like one and he definetly carries the Flaxen gene.
I'm going to post some new pics of the filly that show her color a bit better. After doing some research,I do think that she is just a very light chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail. She does, however, have pink skin even under the darker parts of her coat and her eyes are a really neat blue/green.
I'll just have to be patient and wait for that baby fur to shed!
