Chestnut/gray

Postby docjocoy » Thu Oct 09, 2008 12:34 pm

Have there been any outstanding race horses that were bred on a chestnut/gray cross?

Right off the top of my head Eight Belles.... I thought about this too from the absolutely scientific standpoint of owning a grey filly based on the chestnut/grey cross...

Thanks Spex, I knew there must be some, but was hitting a blank. My business partner is giving me a hard time over possibly breeding our gray to a chestnut.

You might try looking at horses registered as roan. Seems like folks call black based horses gray, and chestnut based ones roan.

Lady's Secret was by a chestnut and out of a gray. Does she count?

That picture is a chestnut/gray mating? She's lovely.
We're looking at Swiss Yodeler, but we have 3 we are looking to get a multi-mare discount, and one of them (not the gray) is considered kind of a hot prospect, so I'm trying to find the best deal I can, and it is kind of a fun position to be in, for once. I do have a budget, and won't go over it, but will spend a little more on the "hot" mare if I can get a good package for all three.
Thanks for doing that research for me. My business partner is very color conscious and was worried about it.

What's the concern about the grey/chestnut combo? Or the folklore?

My business partner likes the classic dark dappled grays and is not partial to the reddy grays, and seemed to think there was not ever a chestnut/gray as an outstanding TB. Now that I have put her mind at ease about their racing abilities, she can deal with that color not being her favorite.

Well, the Chestnut based grays can go through a stage where they are --Pink--. Hard to take "Mr Macho Stud" seriously if he's pink. Shouldn't change the speed that they run.

However if you have any questions, Jorge from this board probably know more about gray Thoroughbreds than anyone on the planet.

Flashy Bull. I saw him as a 2YO and he was pinkish.
His brother PINK viper is also by a grey sire---hence his name? maybe he went through that stage.
All shouting does is make you lose your voice.
