The parents must be heterozygous grey, that is the only way. Crossing two hetero. grey horses results in a 3/1 phenotype, the horse having 1/4 chance of being non-grey and 3/4 chance expressing grey (be it GG, or Gg genotype). It happens every now and then, perhaps luckily. Many people don't like grey in their bloodlines because it tends to 'mask' the undercoat in this dull color, be it red or black, resulting in the same old grey. Grey is acts like the dilution (creme) gene (both are 'masking' genes); though the dilution genes at least result in a change of color (cremello, perlino, champagne, buckskin, palomino...ect), whereas grey usually stays the same despite the undercoat and is always just called and seen as 'grey'.

It happens, but it isn't common. For racers, greys are sometimes preferred, and I'm rather fond of them myself, but for color breeders, grey is usually avoided due to its dull affect.

Apropos MUCHO MACHO MAN ---who qualifies under this thread!

The following article from the Blood Horse:

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/ ... -keeneland

states that PONCHE DE LEONA
has produced a full brother to MUCHO MACHO MAN and a yearling half brother by the also grey, Tapit.

Can someone provide information on the coat color of these two younger brothers? Since MUCHO MACHO MAN's immediate parents are greys, it seems quite probable that on this occasion this full brother is grey. In the case of the Tapit colt the odds are also running in favor of a grey.

Thanks in advance for any information on their coat colors.

Hi everyone,

In Aethervox's post there is Lady Tamara. Her dam High Run was a nice racehorse, placed in Dutch classic races, but nothing special. A friend of mine, great lady racehorse trainer told me many years ago she couln't understand it that this filly (Lady Tamara) was doing so well in France. But Kenmare of course was an outstanding stallion, he improved his stock.
The more I get to know people, the more I love animals.

Here is another good example of a solid color Thorougbred
(non grey in colour) coming from a pair of immediate grey parents.

Not yet a stakes winner but deserves a meritorious mention.
