The curious case of EQUIRIA (Dark Bay m 1962)!
By all official accounts, this mare was officially registered as a “Dark Bay”, but at the breeding
shed she behaved like a gray by producing a pair of gray mares (Breach of Faith [1974] and In the Bag [1971]) from non-gray sires.
It is strange that although these gray mares went on to produce gray progeny, the error on EQUIRIA has never been corrected. To make things sort of strange, EQUIRIA’s dam was not registered as a “gray” but as a “dark gray”.
Why the registry’s anomaly in keeping this “gray-behaving” mare as a “dark bay”? Was she really a “dark bay” (phenotypically speaking) mare that cannot be labeled as a “gray”?
Hey, how many 21st century “gray-interrupted” (officially known) lineages are out there that you are aware of?

I would guess like Mastercraftsman she was registered as a foal before she started to turn grey and it was never corrected. (at least HE was eventually corrected). Or it was corrected and it just didn't make it into this DB. She's obviously a grey though both from a grey and producing greys that produced greys (to non greys). Not a mystery, just an error.
