S.S. STONE --- Interesting case!

Postby Jorge » Tue Apr 05, 2011 7:25 am

This horse S.S. Stone is a gem in the rough. Keep in mind that this late maturing horse has screws on his legs. His pedigree is superb, his origin top class, he is capable of clicking good times, has stamina, he has overcome adversity. Hmmm, looks like a horse with an interesting sire potential. Look who is the Native Dancer daughter from whom he is inheriting his coat color (Bright Silver). Certainly a very interesting story.

The best moment to expect a gray Thoroughbreds to win is:

1) When he or she is not a solid betting favorite. (remember the Native Dancer and Holy Bull flop in their Derbies).

2) When they are clicking good breezing times while training, regardless
of their odds. (Giacomo's Derby)

3) When they are at odds between 1-15 and 1-30. (Decidedly's Derby)

4) When at least 20% of the field are grays, whether the rest of the grays are mere "also rans". (Dancer's Image's Derby)

5) When he or the gray team he represents are coming from a historic defeat no one was expecting. (Determine's Derby in 1954 after Native Dancer's flop in 1953)

I have found the aforementioned tips very helpful.

Usually the best way to make sure they lose is to have me bet on them.

wow Jorge you have all a theory set up there! here in Gran Canaria we have a "new" gray in our races since October 2009, which was bought in England at the tattersalls sale.

His name is Life of Chaos, he's doing pretty well, although our races aren't high level, and always between the same horses...that's what happens when living in an island!

Isn't this the same horse that was trained by Doug O neil and was taken to Nick Zito and made a better racer?

Mere curious observation!!
As per Life of Chaos, interesting gray source (Sovereign Path) from yesteryears.

Jorge, how interesting this grey boy is through Birdstone and Grindstone.

It seems they are the little guys of the winners but I'm wondering what your and everyone else's opinion is of Unbridled being in there? If this guy had to have some surgery (sorry my computer would not let me read the link you posted) do you think it came from the Unbridled line?

Hate to do it but I have to mention the very pretty but china fragile Unbridled's Song. His foals are gorgeous but they are not sound.

What do you think about this SS guy?

I like his pedigree and the fact that his lower half is yesteryears' high quality. Perhaps some people may want more precocity from him but in my opinion he has an auspicious future.

Jorge, I meant like china plates, cups, things like that, they are pretty but brittle.

I love the Grindstone/Birdstone in him. Please do let us know when he is running again...would love to watch him.

On another topic, I was watching TVG over the weekend and of course every time there is a grey horse I really watch them now cause I know you love them so, but I noticed that there are some that almost look like appaloosa's. They will have the grey dapple, but then there is a huge patch of white or a smaller group of bigger white patches. Very unusual, and the sires are chestnut, bay, etc. so the wild color is coming alot from the mares obviously.. I, myself, love the way Giacomo looks right now. Very pretty, sound boy!

just to add to your grey research Jorge, two others that we have here. No youngsters though... !

This one started as stallion last year, comes from Linamix, which was homozygous grey I think...

and this broodmare by Delegant, which they brought over to cover with my stallion last December. She had a very pretty grey filly a few years ago, looked "silver"...but unfortunately had an accident while traning and died. The rest of her offspring, all bay ! Let's see what she produces this year

Thank you so much for your comments.

Stamina stallion Delegant makes me remember another gray sire with great bloodlines who unfortunately few people remember these days. His name was El Senor, named to honor Horatio Luro. As per, Speightstown,
good bloodlines....great for Spain! Alas TVE no longer shows Thorougbred races from Spain. It's always interesting to watch their racing cards. It's quite a diferent authentic paradigm, isn't it?
