BAYOU -- Opinions on her phenotype

Postby Jorge » Thu Sep 01, 2011 6:39 pm

A collaborator just came across this case and sent it to me.

Opinions on the photo, actually on the phenotype of this filly.

That or maybe the muddy phenotype? :D Impossible to tell without more pictures (esp. a color one). Maybe write to Claiborne and see if they have pic. or remember.

My vote is with mud. Look at how wet the track looks, and how deep her hooves are in the surface of the track.

I disagree with the mud, her front stocking is clean. It could be that they wet her down before bringing her to the track. I used to work for a trainer who would do that before he sent his to the paddock.

As the hair is curly it would suggest the plaits have been removed and it could be break out sweating after exercise

She's body clipped there it appears so maybe this is an odd sweating pattern?

Is this even a race day photo? She only has her name on the saddlecloth, no number in sight anywhere.

Interesting markings on a gelding whose 4th dam was Levee, Bourtai's full sister (perhaps strange markings really do run in the family . . . although his Storm Cat grandsire might have something to do with it):

That is probably scarring on Duncan. Maybe he hit his head on a gate.

That looks like a scar from a liquid to me on Duncan.

there are no leaves on the trees would suggest late fall, this looks like a combination of sweat and long hair.

I think those trees are palms, so I don't think you can determine the season from them.

She could have run down south in the winter, but the Acorn is at Belmont, The Gazelle at Aqu, the maskette and the CCAO at Belmont as well. (at that time it was run there, now Saratoga). But I could be incorrect on the photo.
