My mare by Way West looks black and so does Way West. Both are registered as bays or browns. Do you think Way West is a true black? A pic is on his pedigree page.

Head shot of my mare. She is starting to fade a little now that she is turned out most of the time. I will be sending in the test to see what color she actually is.

Just curious why they wouldn't have registered him as a black.

Because he probably wasn't submitted as black. TJC requires extra proof a horse is black and thus many owners won't mess with trying to do it.

That mare is most definitely black.

Agree both are black. Shame about Way West getting laminitis.

I wonder if that came through Princequillo? Somethingroyal is in there a couple of times from him, plus he has Round Table. Plus Tudor Gleam is in there as a b/blk, which would then throw another black gene in the mix.

Bay horses are Black based horses that have a "A" gene, This comes from Agouti, and comes from work on mice.

Black horses are black based horses that have "a" the recessive version of the gene, and two copies of "a" (aa) indicate that the horse is not bay, and doesn't have the Agouti gene.

So the test result (aa) means that the horse is black.

Yes she is black but I did not test her for red factor. I was testing her for the buyer and we only wanted to make sure she was in fact black and not a dark bay.
