http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echidna

Wiki link.

Echidnas (play /ɨˈkɪdnə/), also known as spiny anteaters,[2] belong to the family Tachyglossidae in the monotreme order of egg-laying mammals. There are four extant species, which, together with the platypus, are the only surviving members of that order and are the only extant mammals that lay eggs.[3] Although their diet consists largely of ants and termites, they are no more closely related to the true anteaters of the Americas than to any other placental mammal. They live in Australia and New Guinea. The echidnas are named after a monster in ancient Greek mythology.

Hello,
maybe it's a bit of interest.

As early as 1838 a thoroughbred was named 'Echidna' (by Economist, Fam 24), her best known son was the Sire "The Baron", who inturn is the Sire of the FB's Stockwell/Rataplan.

There are 2 more horses listed in the Database with that name.
Regards, Bettina
P.S.: in Germany it's called "Ameisenigel" (Literally: Ant hedgehog, because it's lookalike this animal)

They are really cute animals.. like a platypus, they lay an eggs, which they then provide milk for when they hatch.. The egg is carried in their pouch... We have loads of them here at home and they are seriously cute!!
