My boy is growing up! He's at Pennylane Farms and she's doing an amazing job starting him. But yesterday he had a big boy spa day to get prettied up for some pictures. I'd love to share a couple.

Gatsby aka Cleverly Concealed

He just turned 3 a few days ago (late baby) and I'm so pleased with how he's turning out. :D On a minor note ... his white markings are starting to reappear which is kinda cool.

Those The Rhymer doses are of my interest.
This is not the first time I have came across The Rhymer.
Anyone knows something more about The Rhymer?

Shows up in Lil E. Tee's pedigree. But that's about all I know. :)

No idea on The Rhymer, but I know when I bought Elizabeth Victoria and stated that she threw colour 6 out of 6 times - 4 times bred to 3 different solid stallions - that you felt it was Vertex in her background. No?

This is the little guy that has a lot of white (I know, now hard to see) all grown up.

Gatsby at birth and a few hours old with his dam ...

Be aware that the crop-out white, DIRECT'S UNIQUE ONE (White H 2001)
is also carrying one dose from THE RHYMER.

The following interesting note under the pedigree of DIRECT'S UNIQUE ONE is new to me. Here it goes:

"At stud: Texas A&M University, Commerce TX; http://web.tamu-commerce.edu/academics/ ... lions.aspx Also, a pic of what appears to be a DW base Ch foal--TB??? http://web.tamu-commerce.edu/academics/ ... mages6.jpg Possibly one of his progeny?"

And I see Vertex in there as well.

Jorge, please forgive my ignorance here but what is this Rhymer all about?
Just a little confused

It looks like Direct's Unique One is a new mutation (without knowing his sire and dam and their markings) so it doesn't really matter who is in his back ground. He's no. 1 of the line.

But ...this is where it gets confusing. I post a picture of my horse grown up. Jorge (I think) links him to another horse by virtue of a horse that's common in both pedigree's - different than what Jorge pointed out when his dam was born but I understand science is always changing. But now you say that it's a new mutation for the horse that Jorge linked to so "it doesn't matter who is in his background". So then what was the point of posting it in this thread?

That's what I can't figure out. lol I'm clueless enough with genetics - I try but a lot is beyond me - and then posts like this have me sitting here going "Huh?".

'Splain what's going on .....please! :)

We used to think that white horses came from other flashy horses and you could look to the pedigree for sources of white markings when the parents were not marked so loud. But now we know that dominant white is a spontaneous mutation that happens in the foal and has no bearing on the parent's markings (UNLESS that parent is also DW). It appears that there are two patterns going on here. What we used to think of as sabino (and probably is sabino # something or other) that you often can trace to flashy ancestors and DW which is either an offspring of another DW or the start of a new line. DW horses CAN be minimal marked but they do tend to show certain characteristics. To make it more confusing it appears that each DW line is distinct and some show different styles and variations of markings. To make THAT more confusing there appear to be genes that suppress color expression so a white horse may sire a less flashy horse then that horse may in turn produce a white horse again! But because it is a dominant gene THAT can be traced back from generation to generation until the first mutation popped up.

Clear as mud right?

Oh yeah your horse's line is the Puchilingui line.

summerhorse ... between that black ancestry thread and your reply, I want to go back to bed!

Yes Gatsby is from the Puchilingui line and yes I am trying to learn more about DW and what it can and can't do .... but I still can't figure out the connect to that horse pedigree that was posted. But I'm ok with that. :D I can die without knowing and that's ok. :?

Thanks for your explanation though, as always I pick up a bit more information to add to the stack. :) Much appreciated!

No connection really, Puchi was the first of HIS line. And you can trace yours directly back to him. He is gorgeous by the way! :D
