There's a picture of a painting of Brilliant on the sport horse database.

There is a color painting mentioned in the notes that indicate that Brilliant was really buckskin.

I haven't checked for the presence of Brilliant in the nether reaches of Milkie or Glitter Please's pedigrees but Brilliant's dilution came via his dam and was in all likelihood ultimately attributable to Darcy's Yellow Turk who is ubiquitous in TB back pedigree.

Looked at Milkie at one point and there is a whole string of brown/bay mares on the female tail side of his pedigree. I'm guessing that that is where it came down. And yes, it is not X linked, but most of the stallions in his pedigree were pretty well known, and more importantly, were clearly chestnut or bay.

Just a guess, but the cream gene may have been hidden on a black, or a dark bay with a heavy dose of sooty.

I agree with you that Milkie's source is probably female and that the cream dilution can go unrecognized (btw, it's mapped to the MATP gene on ECA21). Have you checked the ASBs to see if any of the North American-breds were reg. as "lt [base coat colour]"?
