Bay horse with 'gray' tail?

Anybody catch sight of "Chibita" in Race 7 at Hollywood Park this afternoon? He's a bright bay with dark mane and a rather ingruous 'white' tail. I'm sure it's similar to the 'skunk' tails you see on some dark horses but the entire tail appears to be white or light in color until he switches it a bit and then you see a small bit of black or dark on the underside. Pretty unusual and it caught the eye/comments of the TVG group as well....

I suppose that the photographed equine shown in the aforementioned "quote" is not CHIBITA

Jorge...this is the Gone Fishin-Aidensfield colt that we put through the CTHS Yearling Sale a few years back. I think the now deceased new owner named him 'Arabian Kissed', but he never made it to the track, as that new home proved to be less than stellar, from rumours that we heard. Haven't been able to track him down.

That's the kind of tail shown by Over The Counter, a 2-yr-old light bay filly w/big blaze. She placed third in Belmont's Race 2 today.... $85k stakes rsce, one mile.

Hip # 296 puzzles me because I see NO black whatever on the legs! If you don't see the mane, it's a chestnut.

I would say he's probably a "wild bay" with a "gulastra plume". I believe that the black on the legs is very limited (to the lower leg I think) and/or lightened on wild bays so that it's hard to see and could easily be masked by this horse's stockings.

He doesn't appear to have any rabicano characteristics as he doesn't seem to have roaning (but it could be very minimal) and the coon/skunk tail characteristic includes white hairs at the base of the tail. The base of 296's tail looks to be chestnut with a hint of black and then a good amount of white underneath.

The silver gene isn't in thoroughbreds, and even if it was, his black mane wouldn't fit with silver.

He's only a yearling. It sometimes takes them 2-3 years to get the black all the way up. He could stay wild though. This tail could also be particularly long lasting "baby flaxen" which may grow out over the next few years. It's quite blonde/yellow as opposed to the blue/silver of gulastra plume, which leads me to believe it's baby flaxen.

I'd love to know what he is genetically but he still LOOKS like someone stuck a bay's head on a chestnut's body. :lol:
