Mongolia has races of about 18 miles (if memory serves correctly). The horses are small (13-14 hands) but are ridden by children. The race is over open ground, and covered by tv cameras mounted on trucks. They gallop the whole way--they don't dawdle. Remarkable stuff. Videos can be found on YouTube. 8)

Mongolian horses are never stabled. They spend their lives outdoors, and are very tough. I have no idea of their speed by the clock, but when they are taken from the steppes and treated like racehorses commonly are, they lose their speed. 8)

Try to find a photo of a traditional Mongolian saddle.

Bast,

Your comments also makes me remember of how Argentinean horses
(Thoroughbreds may be included) were raised and their reputation for toughness and durability. You don't read very often on medication fever
and "supplements". What a coincidence, huh!
