What Does This Mean Please??

Postby juliet » Sun Jan 16, 2005 11:27 am

In searching for this mare's pedigree, this was written on the top of it:

FORBIDEN BEAUTY M, 1992 DP = 8-4-3-0-1 (16) DI = 5.40 CD = 1.13.

Now i understand that M stands for mare and 92 was the year she was born but can anyone tell me what the rest of it means?? :D
Thanks a bunch, Jules

The rest of the numbers constitute a Roman (for Dr. Steve Roman) dosage profile. You can get a full description of what a Dosage profile means and how it is calculated at http://www.chef-de-race.com.

I don't put a lot of stock on Dosage, but there are some that do. At any rate, it doesn't hurt to know what the profile means.

There is also a good tutorial at Thoroughbred Champions.

Dosage is a tool. It predicts how fast or far a horse will run based on what its near relatives (posessing the same stallions within 4 generations) have done.

Dosage is not a robust way of predicting performance, as only a very few stallions contribute to the dosage calculation. It completely ignores the influence of the mare, and it ignores the influence of stallions who are not labeled chef-de-race.

In the scientific world, where I work in real life, we refer to this sort of thing as a first order calculation. It is not necessarily accurate, and not necessarily correct (!) but it gives you a very rough idea of what to expect.

Dosage is a reflection of statistics. It is a numerical representation of how certain stallion influences have fared via their offspring.

And because it IS statistics, it is constantly being refined as more indivuals add to the results, and there will always be individuals which will fall outside the typical expectations.

I am not sure why dosage so often gets villified in a sport where statistics are so highly valued and put to use by the gambler. Average winning distance, first-time lasix percentages, trainer percentages, jockey percentages, and so forth are readily quoted by experts. Dosage is a tool like any other stat. Use it like you would use any other piece of statistical information.
