JOE HOOKER, Chestnut stallion foaled 1911 by Rey del Sierras, out of Sainperia by Sain. This horse, I believe was bred by Mrs. Neva W. Sauer (the W stands for Winters)...she was the daughter of Theodore Winters who owned this horses paterenal grandsire.
His Sire Rey del Sierras was by JOE HOOKER, chestnut stallion foaled 1872 and died in 1895. This JOE HOOKER was owned by Theodore Winters.
The 1911 JOE HOOKER was orginally registered as REYPERIA...but there was a name change found in ASB XIII pg 735. "JOE HOOKER (formerly Reyperia).
Was it common in this time period to have two horses, especially ones so closely related, carry the same name.
In later times the first horse might be named JACK PAYNE....the later JACK PAYNE II.
Thanks, Pat

Maybe not "common", but it was not at all unusual.
Don't forget Joe Hooker Jr.. (Yes, really. Verified from the ASB & BRIS).
