Dam of Harry Bassett (1868)

Postby steward » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:49 am

A newspaper obit for Harry Bassett stated that his dam Canary Bird had only two produce (probably in error?).

Could someone with a stud book double check that statement, and clean up the duplication for Canary Bird's progeny in the process?

I'm not asking for much. :P

Her produce record checks out vs. ASB vIV. It also lists an unnamed foal for 1884, so her record may continue in vol.V (I don't have that one...PZ? Can you double-check?).

The article is clearly mistaken - the writer was likely looking at ASB v.I, which only contains her first two named foals. Pretty sloppy reporting, as she'd produced another stakes horse by the time of Harry Bassett's death. ;)

Dupes are cleaned up. Feel free to remove any unnamed horses you find ("King Alfonso Colt", etc.), they are no more welcome here than unnamed modern horses are. You can PM them to me if you aren't sure.

Additional produce for Canary Bird from 5:192
1884 ch c King Bird x King Alfonso
1885 br f Canaria x Falsetto
1886 barren
Mare died Feb. 3, 1887

The source for her produce records in the ASB would have been Woodburn, i.e. they're highly reliable.

Four of her sons competed in the American Classics:

The Pat Malloy Colt (later named Basset) - 10th in the 1882 Kentucky Derby
