Clearing up Wanda (1882)

Postby steward » Sat Apr 03, 2010 9:31 am

There are two Wanda fillies in the database foaled 1882, one by Mortemer-Minnie Minor and the other by Billet-Wieland.

In researching, I've run across those fillies in newspaper articles and confusion arises when the breeding isn't given. One filly tended to race in the Midwest, and the other in the East.

There is one piece of information that is seemingly wrong in the PQ database. The 1884 Clipsetta stakes is credited to the Mortemer filly. However, in the "Spirit of the Times" article that covered it, the paper credits the Billet filly owned by Fleetwood Stable. There is some discussion and the breeding given, and it does not seem to be a misprint or error.

Comment or advice?

For what it's worth, "Hogan's Index to Stakes Winners" credits the Mortemer-Minnie Minor filly with several stakes wins, including the Clipsetta. Wieland is not listed as the dam of any stakes horses.

Of course, Hogan's could merely be the root of an ongoing error. I'll keep poking around. ;)

On June 10, 1884, Lorillard's Wanda (by Mortemer) ran at Sheepshead and finished second in the Foam Stakes:

On June 11, the other Wanda finished second in the St. Louis track's Coquette Stakes:

Using other clues, it seems obvious that the Wanda by Mortemer did not win the Clipsetta stakes at Latonia on May 30 and should be attributed to the other one in the database. (The Foam stakes placing should be added.)

To be con't ...
