Old Barnum or just "Barnum"

Postby Toccet02 » Mon Nov 29, 2010 3:32 pm

From DRF 1896:

Old Barnum is 17 years old and leading a
sedate life at East Randolph N Y where H J
Woodford has a farm The old horse won a
quarter of a million dollars for Mr Woodford
raced 13 years ran 296 races and won 86 of them

There is a Barnum in the database with a likely birthdate (18)
http://www.pedigreequery.com/barnum5

but a different owner. If this is the right horse, let's add the racing record!

That Barnum was definitely a foal of 1879, per ASB vIV. There are no other Barnums registered in the ASB for that era. Judging by the comment left, the owner listed was his owner if record in 1888; that may not reflect his entire career.

I added the record but left the earnings blank - since it says he won the quarter-million "for Mr. Woodford", that total may not include purses he earned while racing for other owners. Better to leave it blank than have it be wrong. ;)

Sorry - looks like the database was being stubborn. It's fixed now. :)

thanks very much! Would be cool to see if his relatives have any racing descendants (on dam side). That was one sound hose.

According to a Chicago newspaper, at the end of 1889 Barnum already had won 84 out of 270, but only $44,000. The article was less than flattering about his owner Woodford, mentioning banishment from many American tracks.
