Could someone tell me anything about Thurio http://www.pedigreequery.com/thurio please? It turns out that my two year old has him about 75 times in his pedigree.

Thurio

Postby Bettina » Wed Feb 05, 2014 4:23 am

Hello,
following infos I got from my own small library about Thoroughbred books.

Thurio, bl. or br. c. 1875 from Cremorne ex Verona by Orlando.
won 12 races incl. Craven Stakes and Newmarket Derby, Queen's Plates at Chelmsford, Northampton, Ipswich and Goodwood, Alexandra Plate, Ascot

I did a small research about abovementioned Sire. Thurio is the damsire of Dark Ronald, imported to Germany and foundation Sire of a still existing Sireline.
Maybe it's a not so widely known, he is the Sire of the Granddam of Hurry On. Hurry On in turn is the Sire of 3 Derby Winners (Captian Cuttle, Coronach, Call Boy), but couldn't found a lasting Sireline.

Hurry on is the Sire of:
Precipation, Feridoon, Diligence, Nesiotes etc.
and the fillies/broodmares
Will O'the Wisp (Luciano, Ultima Ratio)
Quick Change (Danzig)
Pennycomequick (Oaks)(Pensive, Seaneen, Second Set)
Nuvoluna (Navarro, Nebos)
Mirth (Will Somers, Balidar)
Padua (Relic, Blue Larkspur, Raise a Native)
Jury (Surumu)
Hajibibi (Sharpen Up)
Althea (Antonio Canale, Appiani)
Fille D'Amour (The Phoenix)
Tobaggan (Oaks)(Bobsleigh, Citation)
Instanenous (Court Martial)
Plack (1000 Guineas)
Cresta Run (1000 Guineas)
Just to name a few.

Hope I could provide some useful infos.

Regards, Bettina

Very informative. Do you think that there also might be a picture somewhere of this horse?

Hello,
thanks for mentioned above Sires.
Interestingly ion your list is Son-in-Law. Not to long ago i realised he founded a Sire line of his own, via Bosworth - Plassy - Vandale - Herbager - Appiani - Star Appeal (German's first Arc Winner) - Star Way (AUS).
Appiani stood several years in Germany, besides Star Appeal he didn't left much, the same happended with Star Appeal, even he stood some years at the National Stud in England. His best offspring was Kamiros in Germany.

On the other hand his Sire Herbager is the Sire of Big Spruce (Silvano, Sabiango), Dike, Grey Dawn, Herbalist, The Pruner, Sea Hawk, Our Mims etc. and Sire of I will follow (Rainbow Quest), Ballade (Devil's Bag), La Magnarelle (Le Glorieux)

A snother son of Dark Ronald was send to Australia, his name was Magpie (Dark Ronald o/o Popinjay).

In the case of Hurry on, I should mention, he developed his Sire line in Germany for a few generations via Captain Cuttle - Pilade(stood in Germany during the 1940's) - Zliten - Caran D'Ache - Waldcanter (see Sternkönig)

Parlo was so kind to make sure I received the following:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... --1----0--

And Parlo wanted to remind me of the fact that Thurio was a grand prix de Paris winner what can also be read in the paper clippings:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_de_Paris
In Thurio's time the distance of the race was 3,000 metres. It was shortened to 2,000 metres in 1987.

Thank you, Parlo!

By the way there is also Golden Boss: http://sporthorse-data.com/d?i=14723

Hello,
many thanks for the additonally informations.

I had a look at the offspring of various Sires you mentioned:
Ortello (from Italy), Sire of Allgau (German Derby winner, Torbido) and from the same damline are Orsenigo, Oise (Platini, Paolini,Acambaro), Rosa di Brema

Asterus extended his Sireline in Germany via Magnat - Nebelwerfer- Kaiseradler - Windwurf and hsi sons

Le Volcan is bred (2x3 Durban) through the close relatives Tourbillon/Banstar ,see Relko/Reliance +Match, Ruling/Rocky Mountain.
Le Volcan was obviously send to Chile.

Biribi - Le Haar - Frontal (stood in Germany)
Biribi is in the damline of Kaiserwürde - Katinka (Biribi) and in the damline of Tiger Hill, see Trixi (Biribi)

Star (Hurry On), here I found another strain, see Ennis (Pentathalon), Early Doors (4 x 4 Star)

Golden Boss - Gold Bridge (High Treason, Authi his son Wauthi, Hard to Beat, Beeshi, Mrs McArdy

Seabird (Sicalade 4 x 4 Rabelais), Dashing Blade, Arctic Tern, Dubassoff, Gyr, Little Current, Sea Pigeon

And when I checked again my own listing I saw some more instances of Dark Ronald and his son Son in Law.
Son in Law: Manduro - Mariapolis - Figliastra (Son in Law)
Zohar -Zacateca - Katherine Roet (Son in Law)
Dark Ronald: Monsun - Morning Breeze - Pretty Dark (Dark Ronald)

regards, Bettina

Thank you Bettina.

It looks as though the breeding of Thurio can not have been too shabby.

Thurio's son Gluten ended up far away from home:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... rg+Derby--

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?p=165080
His son Anarch: http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=748061 Exported to Germany in 1888. Very succesful racehorse, whose offspring turned out to be very good carriage horses.

My two year old actually has Thurio at least 77 times. On the other hand, he has Hampton at least 622 times...

Still it is nice to know some more about the obscure Thurio!

Hello Bettina,

Yes, Allez France was a wonderful horse.

My two year old also has Rabelais through Primera, Lyphard, Tourbillon (8x), Nearco (22x), Astérus (at least 2x), Johnstown and Wild Risk. And maybe more.

A horse with quite a bit of these elements: http://www.bloodhound.net.au/sample/s256.html
He also has Finglas: http://www.pedigreequery.com/finglas

My two year old has Simone through Charlottesville and through Finglas through Skymaster and Martial (2x).
