Cross referencing horse name changes

Postby steward » Sat Jan 09, 2010 10:39 am

Is it kosher to enter a horse under both/all of its names? For example, Modesty ran 4 races under the name Golden Rod before having it changed in early August of her 2 yo season:

I've made a notation for Modesty's entry. But what if someone decides to search for Golden Rod without knowing the connection?

The same could be said for Alex Barth (1940) who originally ran a lot of races under the name Poacher.

The way the database is currectly configured, no. There is no "alt-name" search, and any case of a mare having two foals in the same year is flagged as an error.

The general rule of thumb is to use the name the horse had progeny under, or (as in these cases) amassed a stakes record under. Any other names should be noted in the comment field.

If anyone is looking for them by other names, a peek at the dam's progeny list should clear up any confusion.

Which doesn't help when you don't know who the dam is - or the sire.
