i'm not really impressed with the data

Postby perryT200 » Sat May 11, 2019 11:31 pm

My associate made all of his breeding plans earlier in the year. Tried to bring back a 4yr old mare to training that had cut her leg before. Rider told him she wouldn't run so I got a mare to breed.

Karah's Channel in Indiana breeding to Notional.

At first I started looking at Notional to the Mr Prospector line numbers. And pulled up the equibase to see if they matched.

There was some glaring differences.

Rainy day so I spent a few hours going over Notional progeny line by line compared to Equibase.

I'm the guy that updated over 10% of Notionals stuff today and put the Equibase link in the confirmation notes.

Which is really a pain since you can't copy and paste the horses name from here.

Biggest difference in winnings was over $100000. Biggest difference in number of races was over 50

Now I run into stuff that doesn't even make sense.

https://www.pedigreequery.com/spooninthemoon

It says 4 starts but no results or money. Worse, there isn't a horse with that name listed on Equibase.

And where do you even get the horses name from? A bunch that are listed that don't even show up in Equibase at all.

According to equineline, Spooninthemoon does exist. If a horse never has a published work, it will not show up in Equibase. You can verify those at equineline instead.

If a horse runs in another country (besides Canada) equineline will show they are a runner/winner whatever it is but it won't show up on equibase because I think it only shows north American earnings.

I've had that issue a few times. One of my mares was from Ireland and I had the hardest time gathering racing stats on some of her relations.

How did you pick Notional for your mare?

Aside from the fact that I am an over educated idiot that can just as easily put the chin strap in a horses mouth when I put the bridle on; there were actually some other deciding factors. (don't worry, when I'm there the exercise rider checks everything like a hawk)

I'm a double idiot. I'm 53 years old and I always thought there must be something special in that Kentucky blue grass that makes horses run faster. Hell there was a time I thought that perhaps some ice age glacier cut more stone and brought up more minerals in KY to make it better to grow horses.
I don't think it was 6 months ago I read they import most of their timothy hay from up north.

Economics. Illinois support for IL bred and foaled races has dropped off the map. I'm not going to look for it now, but if pressed I will show you a chart that in the last 10 years IL foals have dropped by 50%.. No purse money here for the local industry. So I had to go out of state. I really wanted to go to Iowa and breed to a son of Sky Mesa called Formidable. Cross looked great, money wasn't bad and he stands at the University Vet place so care seemed better than adequate. Then the idiot I am was informed that in Iowa they don't have a turf track. The sire of the mare, English Channel is one of the leading sires of turf horses. Really didn't make a lot of sense to go to Iowa after that.

A little more economics. Indiana tracks just got table gaming. Blackjack, all that stuff. Turned em into casinos. The horse racing purses get a cut of that. In IL the tracks are limited to 5 video poker machines just like the local VFW. It might change, and I've got 11 months to see.

Kentucky hasn't figured it out. English Channel mares have an (AEI) Average Earnings Index of .81. They have one of the top turf sires in the country and and can't figure out a combination to come up with horses that are average earners. But that only measures horses of "racing age".

Caveat. But another reason. English Channel horses are notoriously slow to mature (and in my case not that large either) They don't run at 2 and if they run at 3 , it isn't early. Notional ran 3 times at 2 and his biggest progeny Far Right ran 6 times at 2. The sooner I can get it to the track the better.
