Buckpasser x Bold Ruler negative nick

Postby xfactor fan » Mon Jun 19, 2006 2:21 am

This came up in a thread with someone indicating that the Buckpasser x Bold Ruler nick only produced 6% stakes winners, while Buckpasser's average was more like 12%.

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but the first thing that jumped out was this is a large heart stallion on the top, and a normal size heart on the bottom. The second thing is that this is a reverse of the "Speed on the top, class on the bottom" breeding theory.

If the large heart on the X chromosome is correct, this may have some impact on this nick..

Buckpasser would give his Y to his colts, and the magic large heart X to his fillies. Colts would get the X from their dams, who would in this nick have one normal size X from Bold Ruler, and one unknown X from their mothers.

Taking a look at the database, one of the daughter from this nick is Quick as Lightning

The dam Clear Celing is by Bold Ruler out of a Mahmoud mare. Mare would have the Buckpasser X, plus the potential to have a second large heart X from Mahmoud.

Quick Turnover a colt is http://www.pedigreequery.com/quick+turnover

Is out of Bold Consort who is a Bold Ruler x Princequillo mare. And Misty Morn is out of Grey Flight by Mahmoud. So there is the potential that either the Princequillo large heart, or the Mahmoud large heart X got passed on to Quick Turnover.

It also looks like the bred several of the daughters of Misty Morn to Buckpasser with lackluster results. This could just have been bad luck that the large heart didn't show up more often, or something else going on.

I also took a quick look at the other big money winners from Buckpasser, and all of the (all that I looked at, not all the horses) had a large heart stallion pretty close in on the mare side of the pedigree.

Would people like to contribute a list of other negative nicks? It would be interesting to see if the large heart on the top, normal heart on the bottom holds up in other nicks.

Thanks

The way that I understood the Buckpasser/Bold Ruler or Bold Ruler/Buckpasser negative nick is that they were more disposed to leg problems and therefore didn't last long enough to prove themselves on the track. Buckpasser was known for producing a crooked front leg(s) in the knee, and with the arthritic knees that BR produced, it wasn't a good cross.

Sure, and that may be part of the reason that the statistics are a bit off. The horse needed to get both the large heart and soundness. Anyone know why some of the starters in the nick were retired? Did they break down?
