Bloodroot

Postby Douglas Brown » Sun Oct 15, 2006 8:38 am

In another thread Louis Finochio made mention of the inbreeding in Bloodroot: "Thats the difference that the TB breeders of today cant remember the way those TB of the past were bred who had soundness plus."

The mention of Bloodroot perked my interest as I have a two-year-old filly that is tale-female to Bloodroot. Bloodroot appears in her sixth generation so I am sure everyone will tell me that it is too far back to do anything with. But, when one has a filly that descends from a classy mare like that, what is the best method to optimize it in breeding?

Bloodroot

Hello, Douglas,
I'm not abreeder, but I'm interestied in Thoroughbred peds since 20 years.

Personally I think six generations back isn't to far back. If you want to strengthen her the line of "Bloodroot", I would look out for a stallion carrying this taprootmare. Her best known offspring are Bold Reason/Never Bend via Lalun. Never Bend's best offspring was Mill Reef and Bold Reason is the dam of Fairy Bridge (Sadler's Well's), besides this topstallion, she had several other descents. Probably this strains are hard to find in America, burt don't despair. Her strain comes in American peds via No Robbery (Swaps) and The Pruner (by Herbarger).

Another stallion tracing to Bloodroot is Frontal (by Le Haar) tracing to Sunbridge a FS of Knockaney Bridge. bred in France and stood in Germany. he was quite succesful, including a German Derby Winner. Interestingly his HS Shermine was sent to Germany, too.

Here is a short survey of Bloodroots ped:
Bloodroot is 4x5 St. Angelo. Her sire Blue Larkspur is 3x4 Padua
Bloodroot carries 2 Bend Or/Macaroni Crosses Laveno/Bona Vista at 4x4 and 2 Isonomy/Hermit crosses Gallinule/Arcadia 4x5. There is a more complex pedigree pattern when you compare Padula/Padilla/Bona Vista, but such things you only see with long time experience. Bloodroot shows linebreeding to Mrs. Ridgeway through her own damline and via St. Simon-Galopin-Vedette. The Granddam of her damsire Brigde od Earn is a FS of Melton.

Hopefully I could gave you some insight.

Regards, Bettina
