question for the experts..ty

Postby galleria10 » Sun Dec 10, 2006 4:43 pm

I have this mare in foal. Should I sell her now, or would I be better off waiting until she foals, and sell them both? She has a A++ nick to Siphon.
Any idea what she is worth in foal???
Thank you in advance.

Just my two cents..

I don't think she's worth much in foal. She has a poor race record; no production record (assuming this is her first foal); and is not a half to any stakes horses. She does have good black type but it's far back and without a good race or production record not likely to arouse interest.

Siphon only has 2% stakes winners from 6 crops of racing and drags his mares down (.99 AEI/1.82 CI). I am gussing he got a lot of great mares at first when he was hot because Siphonic was hot.

However, he has been cold since and got kicked out of Kentucky. He stands for $5000 in PA which I think is overpriced for a stallion with his numbers (compare to Pioneering, Slew City Slew, Service Tripe, Northern Spur, etc.).

This year, one broodmare sold in foal to him for $1500. Last year, 3 sold with an average of $10,000.

The mare's size is not going to help either (under 16hh). I breed to race so size isn't an issue but if you breed to sell you want big, full bodied, correct mares. In the sale world, bigger is always better. :-(

I think you'd be better off selling the foal as a yearling as he sold 23 yearlings this year for a median of $7,000 whcih would at least get back the stud fee. I'd breed the mare to a hot pinhook type of stallion (young, unproven) and sell her in foal to that stallion. Make sure he stands in Kentucky but put her in a Regional sale. This, of course, is if you are selling not racing.

If you don't own your own farm and will be paying board...might be worth it to cut your losses and sell her in foal without a reserve.

Just my two cents.....

I tend to agree with pokeyman here. This is the type of mare it is extremely difficult to break even with for a commercial breeder.
