who should I breed this mare to

Postby mini's mom » Wed Mar 21, 2007 1:20 pm

hi

I own a mare named 'famous woman' - who should I breed her to?

I want to stay away from the mr p soundness issues - there is a local tb stud by maria's mon - he is small - 80 k keenland yearling but did not race much

also what about the cross with eltish?

thanks

If she were mine and located in the northeast. I'd take her to "Legal Jousting." The Indian Ridge son would make a great outcross for the Mr. P line.
Good luck

Actually, I believe Legal Jousting is in Ontario, which is pretty far. I assume also that they would want a New York bred. If it is soundness you are seeking, there is a horse in the stallion register named Ground Storm who made 40 starts. It is an interesting cross, going to Secretariat through Weekend Surprise and Secrettame.

Have you looked at Ima Personal Flag? He was extremely sound, a winner of 20 races in 75 starts and retired sound. The owner is offering a great deal on stud fee $400 due 9/1 or $1400 due stands and nurses...in both cases its live foal guaranteed.

Madelyn, I'm just located across the border from Niagara Falls, NY.. so not that far

Thanks Stedfast for the plug. :D

mini's mom, what are you looking to do with the offspring? Perhaps 'we' can make better suggestions based on your breeding goals.

K-2...I didnt realize you were so close! I go to Casino Niagara all the time..I grew up in Lewiston NY and my boyfriend lives up there. Hmmm my mares all have dates for this year but now you have me thinking about next year. I would love to have a runner at Woodbine.

breeding famous woman

Postby mini's mom » Thu Mar 22, 2007 6:33 pm

thanks for the info

plans - I would like to sell the first offspring or foal share and keep the second one - provided there are no problems with fw ie founder or health issues -

I don't want to ship the mare to canada so maybe new york is where I should be looking - funny about personal flag - there is anice pf filly for sale for l000 - no takers last time I checked - I love eltish but I can't do the 3500 stud fee right now - fw is a wonderful mare and I would certainly not want to loose her

thanks

Hi Mini's,

I don't know that I agree that Mr. Prospector adds unsoundness to a pedigree. I do believe he adds expectation of precocity and pressure to perform at a young age. As with any influence I'd use care if there's inbreeding but the qualities that Mr. Prospector brings to a pedigree are substantial. If the inbreeding is well placed in the the pedigree and through compatible influences it wouldn't worry me at all.

Try a hypo mating with True Direction and Famous Woman (he stands in NY) - nice mating on paper. The success in her family is with sprinters so I'd like a speedball and he was just that. You might be able to get some preferential treatment with a hard running mare like yours.

Good Luck,

Pete

pete:

nice to hear from you even if it is on this board. Thanks for the info and thanks for the compliment on fw.

I am trying to get her feet straightened out ie angles, soles, ect so that she will be more comfortable. The vet was out yesterday and I have computer x rays - he did a lot of oh my's and 'this won't get any better' but he was impressed that she was running around -

I have not decided yet - I had someone contact me about a horse called here's essence. The horse looks rank and hard to handle and I don't want her to have a bad experience or get hurt. Will see what happens - I may have to wait until next year

thanks again

Hi Susan,

Despite the direction that this board seems to be taking I like the honest intent expressed by most of the denizens. The weather broke (70 degrees plus here!) and my hands are starting to work again (thus my posts).

Having Famous Woman fit to carry a foal is foremost but as far as stud fees, don't be so easily put off because it might be possible to work a deal. As far as foal shares I advise making sure that the value of the stallion is commesurate with the cash that you'll invest to make the deal profitable for you.

Good luck.

Mini, as you may know, Eltish's owner is a member of this forum, and is being diligent about promoting him. I'd second what Pete has to say and I'd think you have nothing to lose by approaching eltish (don't know if eltish the person is a he or a she) to see if some accomodation can be made.
