advice for mgsw mare

Postby justinnich » Wed Sep 19, 2007 8:25 pm

Hey everyone, this is my first post, but I wanted to get a feel for suggestions you may have for a cross with my family's mare Masseuse (I believe listed as Masseuse3...she's a dynaformer out of Pedicure). We're hopeful she still has a few races left in her but in case we end up retiring her this year, I'm trying to come up with a little list for next year. No definite maximum on stud fee, though probably 100k would be around the highest we'd like to go. Oh, and I'd be looking only for horses in KY as well since that's where she'll be retired to.

Thanks for any advice you folks may have!
Justin

Rahy. GREAT value for $60k and has had very good success with Roberto-line mares.

glad to see that name come up, that was actually the first one I proposed for us, haha. Thanks! Still open to more discussion as well if anyone has strong feelings

Vindication matches well. Slew over Mr. Prospector has been successful (both from Mytrlewood). Also sex-balanced crosses of Flower Bowl, Hail to Reason, Round Table, and Bold Ruler in 1st 6 generations.

Just after I sent my post, the horse Noble Casueway jumped into my head and adds credibility to the Rahy match. Your mare and his mare are very similar. Same family combined with Bold Ruler, Mr. Prospector, Round Table, etc. The match with Giant's Causeway (Rahy broodmare sire) was successful.

Another idea:

Silver Deputy. Unlike Rahy, which is mostly an outcross with some good "hooks" into Masseuse's pedigree, a mating with Silver Deputy capitalizes on a couple of important deep linebreeding strains:

For starters, Silver Deputy likes a return of Roman. Champions Silverbulletday, Deputy INXS, and Deputy Jane West all carry Roman (through Pocahontas, Bravest Roman, and Hasty Road). His son Simon Pure, out of Life's Magic, is by far the best foal out of that mare, including trips to Mr P, Alydar, Danzig, and Unbridled. She is double-bred Roman through Pocahontas and her 5th dam. Masseuse carries Roman through Hasty Road.

Moving right along, if you do a search for my user name and Plucky Liege, I did a bit of digging and found that Roberto has done exceptionally well with the addition of Plucky Liege's son Bois Roussel, both on the sire side and the broodmare sire side. Silver Deputy carries Bois Roussel on his damline. With mares carrying Roberto, he has Gr-2 winner Posse (2nd dam by Roberto), millionaire Gr-2 winner Badge of Silver (out of a Silver Hawk mare), UAE Derby winner Spring at Last (out of a Dynaformer mare), and SW Quelle Beaute and Gr-2 placed Badge of Truth (out of Kris S mares). He has 5 foals of racing age out of Dynaformer mares and all of them are winners. Three of them have earned more than $100k and all of them have earned more than $25,000.

Regarding the 3x3 Mr Prospector, I wouldn't let that stop you. He has stakes winners who are 3x3 to Mr P via Fappiano, Gone West, and Forty Niner and good earners who are 3x3 via the three above plus Gulch, Pentelicus, Seeking the Gold, and Two Punch. He also has a winner of $258k out of a mare by a full brother to Mr Prospector. It doesn't seem to be HELPING--his best runners still either carry Roman, Roberto, or Bold Ruckus--but it doesn't seem to be HURTING any.

Brookdale farm, $30,000. Wonderful, solid value all the way around.

thanks all for your suggestions...in the end, I'm sure it'll come down to strategy as far as breeding to sell or to race (we don't have a gameplan yet or anything), but Rahy, Vindication, and Silver Deputy all look solid on paper. I like Giants Causeway too but I hear the price may be pretty steep right now, does anyone have a number on that?

In the meantime, we're prepping Masseuse for the flower bowl next saturday...here's hoping she has another couple of big efforts left in her :-)

Thanks again for your help,
Justin
