Mating advice for a Newbie please!

Postby MCGABBA » Mon Sep 24, 2007 7:03 pm

Considering taking a young Fortunate Prospect mare off the track for breeding next year and would appreciate any mating advice for a future stud.

The mare's name is Great Actress...Mr. P top and bottom...She is around 16.2 and has huge bone and feet...Pretty large mare all around...easily runs bullet workouts and can hang with very fast early fractions but due to a quarter crack and a slight knee problem she never reached her full potential.

Read a few articles that suggested that Mr P mares crossed great with Slew sons, AP Indy and his sons...Looking to add some distance without loosing speed...Breeding to race...Stud fee range from 10,000 to 20,000.

Thanks.

Hi there... welcome to the forum. Is there any particular State or Region where you would like to breed? That will help people narrow down their suggestions for you.

For a first foal from this mare, $10K might be a bit much to spend.. you could look for something with Slew and tried and true, like Slew City Slew for $6K.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Well, we live in Texas but I'm not a big fan of the state bred programs. New Mexico has a better program due to larger purses but the caliber of stallions that are currently standing in both states just dont get us too excited.

At this time we would rather run in open so hauling to a stud in CA, Fl or Ky wouldnt be out of the question.

Is it just a myth or is it true that the first few foals are the best?

I like Slew City Slew. Seems like the last time I looked he had a high percentage of winners from starters.

If Lava Man didn't exist, would you still be recommending this horse for this mare?

Also, would this mare be better suited crossed with any other lines excluding Slew?

Thank you for your responce!

Obviously you have never looked East.. to a place called Louisiana!!! Texas is dying a slow death when it comes to thoroughbred racing. I predict in 5 years there will be only 2 major tracks and the breeders award program will become practicely non existinct. Louisiana has the best breeders awards program in the nation and has 4 viable tracks that gives someone year round racing!!! NM can't begin to compete with LA. Just the other day a LA bred sold at the F-T sale in Texas for $330K, and several this year have gone for 6 figures. By the way LA has several Slew bred horses that are doing quite well. Take a minute and do yourself a favor and look at what is happening in LA. And, it is going to get better and better. They are predicting the Fairgrounds this year will have MSW LA bred running for $50K+.That is as good as it gets. :D

Remember, BIG prices don't necessarily mean BIG successes!!!

P.S.-- I live in OK and my horses live in LA.

Your right about LA's state program and the purses are great...Yep, I know what your talking about...We have a LA bred two year old Woodman filly in training down there and are real excited about the MSW purses. About the only things I dont like about racing in LA is the darn humidity and the drive over there. I'm on the opposite side of Texas so it makes for a pretty long drive.

I figured you lived in West Texas because you were looking at the NM program. I lived and worked in TX for 7 years and most people don't know how large TX is. It's a hard 2 day drive from El Paso to LA.

Wish you the best whereever you go.

Thanks for the comments.

Still leaning toward a Slew stallion but Pleasant Tap really seems like a nice play considering the quality of horses he gets compaired to his stud fee. I also like the ideal of this mare and Pleasant Tap both having some Stage Door Johnny.

I don't know if its Fappiano, Fortunate Prospect or just the Mr. P but its easy to get this mare to nick an A, A+ or even an A++ with alot of different stallions and bloodlines.

If I was looking for a sprinter I would go the Swiss Yodeler route since he produces good two year olds and the nick is out of this world.

I don't actually just think of Lava Man when I look at Slew City Slew, he is just a great, old, reliable stallion for breed to race.

I very much like Slew City Slew and he is a great value to breed to race but I still say the very best value is his son, Evansville Slew. For $2500, he's a steal!! He now stands in OK. Pleasant Tap is also a favorite of mine. Great value!!

Wish you the best,
