Advice

Postby 30west » Mon Oct 01, 2007 3:20 pm

I claimed a mare that is lame, was wondering if she would be worth keeping as a broodmare. Her name is Wild Morning.

I pulled her pedigree and her half-sister is stakes placed and has 7 wins out of 10 starts, looks like she's got some talent. Her name is Another Audible.

If i decided to keep her, she would be bred to a West Virginia stallion, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
30west

There's certainly enough pedigree to suggest she'd be a useful broodmare, especially in a regional market.
Don't be so humble - you are not that great.

She's Guggenheim, Maven - I thought you'd make an offer for her.

There are some things in that female family to really like. Good luck with her, 30West!

Thanks for the reply's.

What are some specific things you guys like from her pedigree, as i am a breeding noob,

Also if her half sister would jump up and win a nice stakes race would that increase the mare's value as a broodmare. Another Audible ran 2nd in a 45k stakes at prairie meadows in august and then ran back at Woodland Park and won by 9 lengths against the boys, looks like the purses are awefull at WDP alw 9k.

Still try to decide if i should keep her and what sires she would match up good with. Thanks

This mare traces back to the very good foundation mare, Good Morning. The family is full of outstanding performers. She would be a keeper in my program.

If your narrowing stallion choices for your mare to W/V, I would consider Family Calling if he fits her physically.

An idea for the mating may be GHAZNI (not really commercial).
Very cheap ( $ 2,000) compared to his merits and his poential.
But he stands in Minnesota.

Any particular reason you're wanting West Virginia?

Her female line LIKES Cox's Ridge (who LIKES Damascus). Her 3rd dam produced the dam of Sultry Song; other members of her family have done well with Eltish. Eltish is in New York, Out of Place is in KY, and his son Sort It Out is in Pennsylvania.

She would also be VERY interesting with Zavata in KY, who is Phone Trick over Cox's Ridge.

The reason i am sticking to WV stallions is b/c on most i can get a reduced stud fee or free, now if she has a strong family like some of you are saying i might take the shot and breed her to a ny, or ky stallion.

If you like the WVBRED program look at the stallions at NayLee. I especially liike Limit Out and his 2006 record which can be found in the February Mid Atlantic Thoroughbred which has an impressib ve 80.5 winners to starters, 16% stakes placed and 10% stakes winners..

They also have Seattle Slew's last son who is producing some very good looking foals. His name is Gunnerside.

I'm takng two mares to Limit Out next spring. but will probably try Gunnerside the next year.

I have an Honor Grades mare whos dame is by Icecapade out of a Drone mare that I am thinking about breeding. Any ideas as to who or what might be a good direction to head in?

Without knowing your location, your budget, or your plans for the foal, I like her with Alphabet Soup to return Blue Canoe and Sir Gaylord (see produce record of her half-sister by Woodman).

I'm in South Carolina but have conections in Ky. and I'm thinking stud fees up to 10k. This mare was long and liked the grass. Her dame was a G2 winner at Churchill as a 2yd but won stakes till she was 4 on the West Coast. My mare had some minor soundness issues so I'm thinking sound sire. She is 16.2 so she is of fair size. Oh, and I will be thinking of running the foal. And thank you Kimberly.
