3 x 4 to Mr. Prospector?

Postby CurrentlyRed » Sat Oct 06, 2007 5:39 am

I'm more a fan of outcrosses, but have seen a couple crosses that would be 3 x 4 to Mr. Prospector, via Conquistador Cielo in the mare. One of the stallions I looked at on paper was the Smart Strike son Tenpins, if that helps.

All other factors aside, would you pass on a mating solely because that's too much Mr. P too close?

I tried searching the site to see if it's been discussed before [surely it must have been] but my search skills weren't good enough. :?

Any opinions appreciated.

Thanks.

Inbreeding to Mr. P

Here's a link including Goldmine results for inbreeding to Mr. P. Check the pages (endless information on this subject), inbreeding to his dam, his sire, his sons, etc.

I researched this for another TB group I belong to. Mr. P x Mr. P in the first five generations has produced 99 graded stakes winners while Mr P x Raise A Native (through something OTHER than Mr P) has produced 194 GSW's. Raise a Native x Raise a Native through something other than Mr P has produced 101 GSW's. Interesting.

Thanks Fastappy, but I couldn't get the link to work - and it sounded like a great one.

Madelyn, your research is fascinating. Especially since when I looked again, the one Conquistador Cielo mare also has a cross of Raise A Native through a different son [Tonkaton].

Sorry about that! Just search "Inbreeding to Mr. P."

I don't know what I did wrong on the copy & paste but good luck!

Mr. P was an exceptional sire. Not just a good, or a very good one.
No doubt about that.
In my opinion we should not have fears hoping to get exceptional results by very close inbreeding to him.

I think even 3 x 2 inbreedings to Mr P, obviously through very good subjects, are worth about.

Let me dream of Hypo Matings ...

Brahms x Beaucette
Aldebaran x Dominica
...

I'm considering purchasing a mare inbred 3x3 to Mr. P, from a wonderful female family. Stallions in first four generations include Hoist The Flag and Seattle Slew.

Trying to figure out if I should avoid Mr. P in Stallion choices or include depending upon the rest of the pedigree and physical matchup, of course.

I wouldn't necessarily discard stallions with Mr P for a mare who was already 3x3 Mr P.. but I would more readily take stallions with Raise a Native NOT through Mr P.
