I'm looking for advice on the type of phenotypes in mares I should consider (and avoid) for my stallion. We are looking to breed to race but I'm also looking to breed an eventer should anyone have sporthorse advice too. He's 16.1 and currently on the heavy side from lack of exercise this summer so in the photo I have of him he has a good sized hay belly.
Here's a link to a recent photo:

Thank you. In terms of refinement I have ahd that in mind and looked at some mares which are 17h and on the long, lean muscle side. He's 16.1 and bulky. I wonder if maybe that's too big of a difference?

Something you might consider would be to have him measured. Equix Biomechanics measures horses and recommends compatible phenotypes-something to consider..
It's hard to sometimes grasp the overall physicality from a pic. I additionally viewed his pic attached to his pedigree and thought a mare with muscle and more refined than he is would be what I would be looking for.

He is nice! He has a really long loin and you might want to find mares that are a little more square, if you are looking for mares to buy. If you are standing him to outside mares, I would breed him to anything that was sound to find out what he works with and then start limiting the book. He does look to have long smooth muscles in the picture and you might want a mare with more bunchie (for lack of a better term) type of muscles for him. (look at Northern Dancer as an example to what I am trying to express)
Get a good idea of what his sire and dam look like and you will have an idea of what his babies might look like.
