Mid-Atlantic Stallion Mating Advice

Postby Davec » Wed Oct 31, 2007 11:07 am

I have two broodmares would appreciate some mating advice on with Mid-Atlantic stallions. Went to KY last year, but prefer to stay local if suitable stallions can be found. They will be PA breds, so first preference is a PA stallion, but open to MD stallions as well.

1st Mare is named New Meaning by General Meeting, 16'0. I thought Lite the Fuse might be a good match. Oldest foal is a 2 year old by Fu Peg that has not run yet, this year filly by Roman Ruler.

2nd Mare - Eye Appeal by Cat Thief, 16'2. Currently considering Domestic Dispute and Dance With Ravens. Oldest foal is a Yearling by Dance Master, just had an Exchange Rate weanling colt this year.

Appreciate your thoughts. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information. Goal is to keep stud fee at max. of $10,000.
I should add that I am breeding to race.

Thanks Madelyn. Would appreciate hearing the detail behind why you like those two. I have not heard good things on Real Quiet from other PA breeders I have spoken with. Not a real high fertility rate, lots are crooked or with club foot....however, I do not deny some can really run when everything works out. Sounds like he may not even stand in PA this year, at least at Pin Oak for some of these reasons...

Conformation is something that needs to be judged in person, so I can't comment on it.

Real Quiet x New Meaning

The 4x5x5 Raise a Native (through Mr. Prospector, Alydar and Meadow Blue): Of the nearly 400 graded stakes winners that are inbred to Raise A Native, only 80 are with Raise A Native OVER Mr. Prospector (dam) and only 106 are through Mr. Prospector twice. Fappiano figures in prominently, as does Alydar. There is more linebreeding to like in this pairing, along with the Mr. Prospector/Seattle Slew nick.

Duckhorn x Eye Appeal

Here again, you have Raise a Native through Mr. Prospector and Alydar, along with Storm Cat thrown in for good measure. Add to that the 4x4 Northern Dancer.

As I said, conformation aside. Assuming you know the strengths and weaknesses of your mares, you should visit ANY stallion you are considering prior to booking.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Take a look at Not For Love

He's # 18 on the Laeding Sire's list and his get sell well.. He's by Mr P but maybe more inmprtant is out of one of Northern dancer's best daughters, a graded stakes winner who prodiced four graded stakes winners and is one half to Private Account..

His second dam is also very impressive and I believe the tail female is more important than the sire line.

Thanks Griff. However, Not for Love is at 25K stud fee and we are looking to keep it below $10k this year. Also, note we are looking to race versus breed commercially. Any thoughts on Domestic Dispute or Dance with Ravens?

We have one mare going to NFL, one to Dance With Ravens [she's in fosl to NFL] and one going to Domestic Dispute. The one going to Domestic Dispute would be going to NFL except her sire's dam is a full sister to NFL and his sire is A.P Indy which also takes Dance With Ravens off the table for this mare.

I would have thought that if you could handle Fug Peg's fee you could handle the NFL fee.. They give a 10% discount if you breed two or more mares to any of their stallions.

We like NFL not only because his stuff sells well, but it also runs well; i.e., he's # 18 in earnings on the leading sire list.

We like DWR more for his tail female than for his A.P Indy sire line.. Also, I believe his dam is half to Smart Strike.

We like DD as a commercail sire.

If you are looking for value take a look at Activity.. he stands at Godstone [PA] for $1,500 and has a $38k earnings per starter thus far this year and he's doing this with avearge Mid Atlantic mares.. Compare that $38k per starter to Storm Cats $32k per starter thus far this year and remember Storm Cat gets the cream of the mare crop. .

I also have a couple of mares going to Limit Out in WV. as he has a nice $32k per starter thus far this year.. Last february's Mid Atlantic Thoroughbred had him at $40k plus per starter with 16% stakes placed and 10% stakes winners for 2006. And again, he's doing this with Mid Atlantic mares.

Thanks Griff. Fu Peg foal was before we purchased the mare in foal to Roman Ruler. Fu Peg Stud fee a little out of my league...... I will check out the ones you mentioned. Do you like Dance with Ravens pedigree with with our mare Eye Appeal? Got a nice nick on it, but many on this forum seem to be able to add quite a bit more expertise than I have as respects pedigree....

did I mention I think the tail female is much more important is selecting a stallion than th sire line

griff

That's Civilisation as in Gone West X Toussaud
I think his fee is $3,500

Just received the Mid Atlantic Thoroughbred.. Suggest you go to page 60 and check average earnings per starter.. limit Out and Activist are there ar $32k and $38 and so is Smartguy with $74k. That's better that A.P. Indy's average per starter and cetainly better than Storm cat's 434k per starter

Both Activist and Smart Guy are PA stallionswhich will increase your PABRED Owner's Incentive from 20% to 30% for a PABRED foal.

Of course the owner's bonus incentive in WV [Limit Out ] is 40%

My advice for Eye Appeal is Fappies Notebook, a very useful and consistent performer, now standing in Florida.
Trying to repeat the cross of Delaware Township.
A very moderate dose of MrP is also introduced.

Fappies Notebook is interesting idea, as Notebook cross certainly worked with Delaware Township. Where is he standing in Florida? I just wish it was closer as vanning back and forth with the foals to KY last year was a lot of work and gets expensive.....

If you're breeding to race, I definitely would agree that Smart Guy deserves a long, hard look. I'm biased, since I work with the folks at Fox Tale, but from very limited opportunities, he's proven he can really get the job done. Rubiyat is another option who in his early crops was bred to very weak mares, but managed to get runners that far exceeded expectations. Don't be afraid to check them out...they offer great value for the breed-to-race market.
